Re: Banteng & Scrub Bulls Thread

Quote:

Banteng were intro'd AFAIK on the foundation of the Balanda (English inserted: white) settlement near Cape Don abt 1860.

The true name for the area in Iwaitja (local Tradional Owners lingo) is Garig Gunak Barlu. The term "Cobourg" is a colonial (swearing deleted) term. EOS.

The last para in the above post is circumstantial and relates only to those animals within the park boundaries.

Not Cape Don.. Victoria Settlement, as it was known by the filthy Ballanders is around in Port Essington. 1830's rather than 1860's.

The part about hunting banteng outside the park is actually now true, as this is part of a safari concession, for recreational hunters. Local people can still hunt them at their discretion of course, anywhere they like, including the park. Not sure if the concession precludes the 'locals' from taking invited guests... I havent read it - but that doesnt matter for regular rec hunters.

There may still be some banteng country not covered by the concession on the eastern side below the peninsula?? on the Maningrida side that is..
