Taking ammo on domestic flights

Will be flying to Darwin for a Buffalo hunt and will need to take my ammo and rifle bolt on the flight in my check in baggage. My rifle will be going to Katherine by couriers. What are the latest rules on taking loaded ammo and rifle bolt in checked in baggage? Is there still some rules about not being able to take ammo in the plastic MTM cases?

Why are you sending the gun by courier and not taking it with you ?

Re MTM's, Not that I know of.

I fly with gus and ammo all of the time - 6 - 10 times a year
and don't have any problems.

I will admit I sometimes pay a bit more to fly Qantas and / or to
get a direct flight but I seem to have less hassles and I can get a
letter of Authority from Qantas
which I present at check in - this always seems to smooth the way
after telling the check in person.

Re MTM vs Factory Packaging - I think they prefer MTM's type
as they are better but ask the irline you are flying with.

Hope this helps

Re: Taking ammo on domestic flights

I,m sending the guns by courier so that it is less to carry/ check in on the flight. I will be flying the family over after the hunt ,so I,m going to have a fair bit of family type stuff to load me down as is. I have usualy sent ammo by courier as well ,so it is less for me to carry ,but the rules for this company have changed.
