338-06

Took the 338-06 for a walk yesterday. Winchester M70 control round feed build by Col Kritendon Vic Running 160 TTSX's at 3080 fps Previous owners build and load. Build was a copy of the extreme weather.
It works , found a small mob and tried to get Joey a shot . It all went pear shaped with a wind change and they bolted. took a late shot at the only boars he was heading for the high ground Good big solid young boar.
Raking shot entering near hip to off side shoulder , 160 TTSX found against fighting pad.
Seen a few more but wind changes made stalking hard.Heres a few pics cheers Mick

Excellent photo’s Mick. I love the 338-06, mine is so nice to use. Have a 338-08 as well. Use mine with Woodleigh’s, never felt the need to change yet. Find both perform above expectations. Your looks sweet and would be a pleasure to carry.

The Greater bowerbird, NT. Is a omnivore, feeds mainly on insects berries and seeds.The bower is built and maintained by the male. mating ritual around attracting a female is around the bower. The male woke us up with the racket he was making around the bower trying to impress the female. First time I've seen the pink crown plumage on a pretty drab bird.
The stuff in and around the bower is the males idea, of furniture to attract the female This one liked snail shells grey slivers of rock and green seeds.
Had a bower near one of my safari camps and after a couple of seasons he had collected a few empty cases. Interesting to watch their behaviour.

Thanks for the answers. Never seen one except on TV. Now I remember it was mentioned they pile up stuff in their "bower" to attract females.

Good pics Mick, the Bower bird ones in particular, very interesting. The 338-06 certainly seems to work well. It's one of Geoff McDonalds (Woodleigh Bullets) favorite cartridges.

Filling the freezer was a major deciding point on taking the red. Able to recover the meat easily. So it has been processed and is now hanging in a mates chiller. My chiller is not built yet.
Looking forward to the sambar as well.
Dogs appreciated the busted up shoulders.

Well done Mick, nice looking animal. You better be careful you don't wear out the barrel on that rifle with the number of deer you seem to be getting in a short space of time.

The ears, very much like African antelope? Yes, No?, yet the Sambar is an Indian deer, isn't it?
Lt. James Forsyth spoke of shooting Sambar Stags in India, mid 1800's.
That is hillier terrain than normal for your pictures, Mic.
He picked a dense place to lay down.

Sambar were originally from India. Released. here a long time ago. Yes very large ears. Colour I'm unsure of, most I have shot were similar. Tips only polished a little bit on this one. they love the real thick scrub.
The country is a lot steeper than it looks.
I was about to call it for a miss after losing his tracks, and no blood when I found him very happy.

Retirement didnt last long , I've taken a part time job, Two days a week in a local gun shop.

20m and no blood so continued on following tracks 40m in and starting to second guess my shot tracks were telling me he was hit.
Lost the tracks at 70m so worked up higher and started looking for the tracks when I spotted him in the bracken! Stoked....
Entry high in top of RH shoulder down length ways into back rear LH leg pretty messy and couldn't find the projectile.
Very steep and had to set up for pics and butchering.
looking forward to the back strap steaks.

Well done Mick. Enjoy the eating, I rate Sambar/Rusa second only to Chital for eating. They can be very hard to find when they drop, really seem to blend in well.
Daryl the Sambar antlers tend to be bark, part of their camouflage I believe. Only the tips where they rub them are light in colour.
Their ears are like radar dishes and they can hear. A mate and I were sitting high above a valley floor when we saw a couple of hinds come out of the bush. Lasered distance was a tad over 300mts and we had a stiff cross wind blowing. The mate opened a pocket on his back pack by moving a zipper about 3". The hinds instantly swung their heads and were starting straight at us. Wish my hearing was a 10th as good.

Moose ears are like that too. We liken the cow's ears as being mobile antlers.
As well, the ungulates possess approximately 10 times the movement acuity that humans have.

Again, perfect performance with the light Barnes bullet. Seems wrong time of year for "deer" to lose the antlers.
That "time" is coming up around here in a couple seeks to a month or so.
