Hunter found dead in the NT

Missing Qld hunter's body found in NT
November 08, 2015 8:06PM

THE body of a missing hunter has been found about 110 kilometres from Nhulunbuy, in an area of the Northern Territory known as the Gurrumurru Floodplain.

THE 50-year-old man, from central Queensland, had been hunting with a friend in an area filled with crocodiles and wild buffalo when he went missing on Thursday.
His body was discovered on Sunday following days of air and land searches.

"It's pretty wild terrain," a NT Police spokesman told AAP.

"It was thought that both were well equipped for bushwalking, but we became concerned when there was an emergency beacon and he did not activate it."

No details on the circumstances of his death have been released and police are yet to recover his body.

Hi,
Craig was a well known and respected member of another Australian hunting forum, and a writer for shooting magazines as well. His passing has been felt across the country with shock and disbelief.

This is a poignant reminder of how harsh this country can be at times, and shows that life should never be taken for granted.

CJ is the brother in law to a mate of mine at ADH magazine. He only informed me this morning as to whom the hunter was.
A sad day for all.

Sad to hear of the connections.

The man was hunting South of where Matt Graham hunts I believe or very close to it from what the article says. Also per the article he had an emergency beacon with him which was never activated, so that says something as well.

Re: Hunter found dead in the NT

A member messaged me and said it had been mentioned online, dehydration may have been a cause of the death.

Hunting in hot tropical climates at this time of the year especially before the Wet can be very demanding, and if something goes wrong, disasterous consequences can happen even to fit and prepared people. Meaning these comments generally and not in reference to the sad circumstances here.

Poor guy, my condolences to his family and friends too.

I hope one can elucidate the cause of the death. When a fit and capable hunter is struck imagine the fate of the lambda hunters.

RIP Jeno.

Talking to a mate in Darwin last night, says the weather is just ridiculous at the moment.

I have found that when hot and very humid like that, it is a real killer if the sun is on you and you are exerting yourself. You can go down very quickly. I believe it was sunny and mid 30's and high humidity at the time. Typical weather there at the build up of the wet.

My condolences to his family and friends.

There is an article by Jeno in the latest SSAA mag, and that article highlights perfectly just what kind of person he was, and what a loss to the hunting community (as well as to his family, of course) this is.

I hunted close to there just a couple of weeks prior, and the heat & humidity was unbelievable....and the friend (a local) I hunted with tells me it got far worse a mere couple of weeks later in the build up, around the time of this tragedy.

RIP Jeno and condolences to his family and friends.

JB,

One of our NE members passed on to me, Craig had beed returning to camp to get more water for the group, who may have run out of water. He had stopped by a tree to rest and sleep and was found there after the search, several days later.

I would guess heat exhaustion, dehydration would have been factors.

When we hunted it was "Winter" and relatively cool and also dry. Now it would be very hot with high humidity. Middays would be like a baking humid oven.

Heat stress can hit you so quickly up in the Northern parts that virtually one minute you're OK the next you can pass out. Had a few of my mates at work (electrical industry) go over like that, scary when it happens as you have to get them into the shade & cool them down very quickly. 5 litres of water each a day is the minimum we carry at all times & we even go through more some times.
Poor bugger, only trying to help his mates out!
My condolences to his family & friends
