Couple of Quality Boars
|
Just got back from a recent feral pest culling trip, helping pastoralists deal with an on-going pig problem.
Even though numbers were well down on previous years (are we winning?) a few top quality boars were taken.
Here are my best two for the trip:
First one was well over the ton (100 kilos) but 2nd one was an old bugger starting to go back, lean in the hindquarters and balding along the spine.
Very few sows with suckers this year, and they were always good for the overall tally.
probably a combination of our relentless culling operations and the el Nino~ drought, coupled with the current Agile Wallaby plague leaving sows no cover near the water in which to farrow.
Of course, a couple of good wet seasons in a row and the pigs will be back.
We'll be ready!

NICE -
BTW - if I may ask, what calibre is that Ruger International, Marrakai? I just picked one up last spring in .243 (1983) and hope to get it's mate Mk11 in .308 from the same friend.

Daryl: the rifle is chambered in .308 Win.
A scoped .308 or equivalent is mandated for feral vertebrate animal culling in Australia, however our members use a variety of chamberings of similar ME up to .45-70 etc.
I bought that Ruger RSI specifically for culling as I had borrowed one for a few days many years ago and really liked it. Got lucky and picked that one up for a song, it had been a safe queen for 15 years but has been making up for lost time in my employ ever since!

Thanks for the answer - they are 'fun guns' to shoot. I had mine out at the range yesterday, setting up a deer/BBear load.

So this time you did not shoot 300 feral pigs, just two that weighed the same.
A couple of nice piggies. I assume this was in the Kymberley?

Looks great! Those stutzen rifles handle well! Certainly a good rifle for Boar hunting ..
