caught out late in the day

Sneaking about as one is want to do on a late Friday arvo I headed into an area renowned for its blackberry bushes, hundreds of acres of them! Knowing that the deer are holed up in the impossible cover as usual but on quieter days come out at times with enough light left had me on my toes.

I saw a spikey up ahead of me and using a berry bush clump as cover I doubled up and moved up into the ambush zone, dwindling daylight didn't help me at all with slow shutter speed and high ISO resulting in ordinary pics, however as the subject is the elusive sambar stag they are 'acceptable'.
The spikey moved back into cover and an errant swirling breeze alerted a hind to my presence she was heading back to cover with this stag in attendance. They crossed in front of me and by rapidly firing off shots i got a few pics, many others I scrubbed as soon as I reviewed them as all the wrong cons buggered them.
Walking a little further i heard them going through a flooded section and coming around another berry bush I saw the stag ploughing through the water like a dozer with a bow wave on either side of him,I rued the missed pic opp there and then.

He is only a young stag but none the less shows the bulk his kind obtain..you can learn a lot about calibres and projectiles when you take these bigger deer.

Oops! something`s up.

You've done it again John, that is a great sequence of photos.

Looks a very solid animal.

Couple of questions.

You say a young stag, how old do you reckon he is ?

You obviously like his antlers and they have potential in the future but what would be measure now ?

Thanks again for posting.

Re: caught out late in the day

He is indeed a bear Nige.

At a guess perhaps three/four.

A low 20`s model

Here`s a front on that is a frigged up pic but shows his antlers ok-ish.

Initially I thought it was the below stag when i saw the white tops in the gloom under the tree canopy buts its def not, same style/shape though.

Awesome, he looks even more impressive front on
(where as the antlers side on look a bit small on him IMHO,
partly because of the way he is carrying them / his head at that point).

Anyway, thanks again.

Damned good pics, Gryphon, and I don't know how I missed them before. You must live/hunt in God's own country.
