Camels - Frustrated by the Weather

With four days to go till we leave for our second Camel shooting trip I get word that rain furthur north has filled the water courses and made moving around the property almost impossible. Pig chasers have been bogged to the axles.

Its good for the grazier and has also put out some bush fires but the mosquitoes will increase and it looks like we may have to cancel.

I've put out a few adverts in local newspapers so we may find an alternative venue not affected by rain.

Frustrated +++

Not good for you but good for the farmers.

Wa talking to a bloke (farmer) a few hundred kms south
of you last night who said the seasons have been
pretty good all over.

Re: Frustrating Weather

If the rain is also in pig country, it will mean better pig numbers too in the future.

But of course, messes up the current trip. Good luck.

Re: Frustrating Weather

The Pig Country up there has had a fair bit of rain
although one spot / area has had very little.

Season has been very good. B-I-L got the the best crop (yield and quality) in the NW. We may still get to go. Fingers and toes crossed.

Re: Frustrating Weather

Due to the rains over the last 12 months, I cancelled my camel trip this year in July.
When I called the station owner, they said the feed is very high and water everywhere with the good season, and that the camels & donkeys have spread out and into remote areas and they were not seeing any around!

Your weather mirrored ours, then. Record rain and for us, record low temps for the summer months. Hope it's a dry winter with little snow.

Re: Frustrating Weather

Sorry to hear that Hunter 338. I hope you hadn't taken leave for that hunt.

Well no rain since last Saturday the 5th. Hopefully it will dry out in the 40 deg heat. With 1,200 squ kms of nothing (no water holes or creek lines, no fences, no roads) in the centre of the property I hope there will still be a reservoir of camels. There are large areas of gibber plain in the South and NW of the place.

If it drys out without more rain we are a goer. Stay tuned ...

Gibber plain - now that is one of the most desolate places I have ever been in my life, probably worse than Woomera rocket range and surrounding area which is very similar.

Sturt's Stony Desert is the other one.

Not much in those places, that's for sure.

Hi John,

That still doesn't sound the best to me, please take a Sat Phone as you may well need more than a Paramedic.....

Cheers Mate,

Jeff

JM

I've forgotten, what is the general area where you hunt, nothing specific, but is it like SW Qld, NW NSW, or something like that.

Puts an area to the terrain and weather you are speaking of.

all ok, rather leave it and go another time when there are a few around.

I saved my leave, looking at something else down the track!

Re: Frustrating Weather

Don't feel too bad lads: this year is shapeing up as the wettest on record here. So far, for the year, we're over 24 inches above normal for the amount of rain we've received. Saturday, a week ago, we got 8 inches of snow...a record for our area, for the month of October. Hundreds of thousands of homes lost their power, and thousands are still doing without it.

700km East of Alice and "Boulia and Diamantina country"
are the same thing.

I think most people can use a map.

If they are thick as two short planks, maybe
but mate, honestly, do you really think people
are that stupid and can't figure out where
700kms east of Alice is on a map.

In any case, it is one hell of a big area and
there is game all over that area in parts.
