I have hunted twice in Africa and once to NZ but have not done much with Red deer here in Oz. My Father got us onto a place in SE Qld to look for a Red. I went to Dads place a day early to pick him up,so I took my rod and a few spinner baits to have a go at the cod after the floods. I caught six Cod and one yellowbelly for the arvo. Here is the best Cod. He was 80cm. ![]() The first morning at the place we could hear four stags roaring. Two were on the one ridge,so after looking at the first one I moved onto the second fella. I worked on him for a while and eventually I got him to thirty yards. One shot with the 9.3x62 sorted him. ![]() |

I used a 286 grain Woodleigh PP @ 2360 fps. After I caped him this was the exit hole. ![]() |

Well done Top trophy together with some very nice fish got to love that the woodleigh pp works a treat to Carl |

Here is a photo of a double 4 that I roared up to about 15 yards. Keep in mind I took these photo's with my phone. ![]() ![]() Then I culled this stag. ![]() |

Great work Neale! Didi the cull have an issue on his left rear leg by any chance? Glad to see you got a nice 5x5 and some good knife handles out of the cull stag too. Regards, MOG |
Cinghiale. I don't think it was a genetic problem, just damage to his head when young (maybe). Didn't notice that he was lame. He had two females with him but he was fairly poor. I did keep the antlers for knife handles as well, you are right. |

Cheers for the reply, I have heard that sometimes an injury on the rear opposite causes malformed antler growth. I just wondered if that was the case here? His pedicle is in a very wierd spot to. Very glad you practice QDM mate, important for all species. How did the Cod taste? Regards, MOG |
"PEDICLE" thats the word I wanted. I left the cod for Mum and Dad for Easter. You sound as though you know your deer Mog. |
Well done Neale, a good result both with Fish and the Red Deer. I am also pleased that Dad was with you, did he have any luck?? Are you going to have the head mounted as it would look nice as a shoulder mount. Cheers Mate, Jeff . ![]() |

Thats a bloody nice stag mate!! well done!! |
Well done Neale. The cod is a ripper and so is the Stag. Love the performance of those Woodleighs. |
Terrific hunting, Neale. You are no-doubt very happy with that effort. Well-done. |
Well done ! That was a great week end , with a real hunt & Wild Stags ! |
That cull is more than malformed antler defects, it has a skull defect, as Neale says, with the antler/pedicle growing out of the side of the skull. I would guess some skull damage at birth or when young. Neale, Good stuff on the fish and two deer. Some nice venison there, and a free range fair chase trophy. Good work with the phone camera too. ![]() |

Mate, I have hunted a few deer, mainly fallow and a fe reds up that way. Honestly I have read a lot more about it than I have done it! I will be down next week so hopefully the roar is still on in the Valley. Good work again mate. BTW maybe you need ANOTHER BRNO in 7x57 or 30-06 as a dedicated stalker rifle... MOG |
Mog. Tony Small has built my 8x68s on a Brno but the stock maker only gets back Wednesday from the nationals. I would have loved to have had it for the hunt. Even though both Stags were under 100 yards there could be some really long shots if you wanted and I was wondering how far I could stretch the 9.3. Jeff. As to Dad. He is not as mobile as he would like. The country is grassed quiet heavily and steep. The cull I shot and the double 4 were roaring with two others. I owe my little bit of success to my father for his advice as well as keeping them roaring and interested while I circled round the hill and got into position. |

Great shooting there Neale. I'm going to have to try a different batch number of those PP's. Awesome performance. Your also lucky to have a Dad like him. |

Good on you Neale, a good weekend by the looks of it, should be more of them. DC |

Congrats mate, I love the start of a new hunting season. |

G'Day Fella's, Congratulations Neale, well done to you also! A nice Red Head (and venison) and a nice feed of Cod to boot!!! Doh! Homer |

Thanks for your comments fellas. I,like a lot of you wish for a bit more time to do more of this especially with my father. Look forward to reading posts of other peoples hunts. Cheers Neale. |

Well done mate. I'm jealous ![]() Did you take them using open sights? |
AFRO408. I could have used open sights for sure but I didn't. There was a chance of some very long shots if you wanted to. To be honest in the heat of the moment I forgot to remove my scope in the timber when stalking. You know "keep it simple stupid". |
Great stuff Neale! Is that the knife that broke? Looks like it is still quite capable of getting the job done. Well done mate. ![]() That bloody phone of yours takes very good quality photos! |

4seventy. This is the knife I am useing at the moment that I made. ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us This is the last one I made for 450Ackley as a swap for a 404j ND. ![]() |

Neale Ok I'm on to it now. When I first looked at your photo of the bullet exit hole with the knife next to it, it looked like the knife blade was very short, and I thought it was broken off. Now I have had another look I can see the blade is dived in under the meat, hiding the front part of the blade. Both those knives show that you definately have an eye and a flair for knifemaking mate! They have an ideal shape for skinning and caping! ![]() Nice country in your photos too. Probably only an hour or so from where I'm sitting to type this. |
Do you live there or are you hunting at the moment ?. Thanks for your comments mate. |
No, not hunting at the moment, but live not too far away. Speaking of knives, If I get a chance I'll take a couple of photos of a skinner/caper that John Jones did for me way back. I retired it a few years ago as the leather belt loop on the sheath was getting weak, and I was afraid of losing the lot. Must get it fixed. |
I have met him and I like a lot of his knives. Look forward to seeing your photo's of a used knife, not a "show piece". |
Neale, I like your knife making skills. Those knives look extremely functional. Cheers Greg |
