Rare Set to Find
      #380784 - 30/11/23 12:28 PM

A while back I blundered into an uncommon set. It's a 1938 BSW (Simson in Nazi Germany) two-barrel set that had not been separated in 1945 like many sporting arms with other barrels or detachable scopes.

It's a BSW Astora 35 BD in 16ga/8X57IR and second set of 16 SXS barrels. It has a more modern store branded S&B 2.5-8 scope in claw mounts. I shoot the shotgun set like it was made for me. The Jewish Simson family left Germany in 1939, and their company was essentially given to the Nazis in 1936, who later re-named it Gustlov Werke in 1939.

It even came with a leather soft case for the shotgun barrels.

Never mind. We enjoy seeing it again, and always many for the first time.

It's very nice. Essentially a "cape gun" side by side configuration. Is it a little unusual to have a 8mm/16-bore scoped?

But I guess for a hunter with only one gun, hunting a variety of game from a hochsitz, a scoped "cape gun", the rifle barrel used like a single shot makes it quite versatile. Boar and roe were favourites is my guess. The shotgun barrel for hare, birds. The second twin 16-bore, everyone needs a proper shotgun.

I like it a lot.

Thanks, John...

I also have a medium grade Sauer set in 12ga and 8X57JR, now scoped with a 2 3/4 power Redfield, not the Weaver K2.5 shown. I've had it for quite a while and often use the SXS barrels for upland hunting. I'm now using the leather barrel sleeve that came with the BSW for this set.

In a fit of lunacy I sold this plain cape gun in 16 and 9,3X72R.

It was sweet pointing gun, well balanced, and dead on at 100 yards for the 9,3 to the open sights...so I sold it. It had a scope at one time but not when I acquired it.

This is a very nice and practical set, especially with its case!

Those combination sets (one barrel pair rifle/shotgun, another barrel pair shotgun only) were actually quite common. At first as side-by-side gun, then also as over-and-under. And you could have even more barrels

The most extensive combo was also made by Simson:

Berg and his wife Illum, is the PH Natasha Illum-Berg a daughter or grand daughter?

Page 121 is missing?

That is an amazing set of barrels. Double shotgun, combination profile / paradoxes, double rifles. Something to aspire to.

Grand daughter. Bengt died -67. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bengt_Berg_(ornithologist)

Natasha was born 1971 to Danish mother Marianne Illum Berg and Danish / Swedish father Iens Illum Berg. One sister, Karina. Brought up on the hunting estate / wildlife and conservation reserve, Eriksberg in Blekinge, Sweden. This reserve, which is one of northerns europes largest protected areas for wildlife, was later opened to the public.

Thanks.

I think a new thread is needed, not to drive luv2safari's thread and find gun, off topic. That Berg collection is magnificent and as I said, inspiring.

luv2safari,

Thanks fo posting and for the web address. I wish there were an English translation of the BSW catalog. If anyone knows of a translated catalog, please let me know. I have a BSW double rifle in 8x57JR build in 1937. I would like to read the catalog to conform the model.

Yesterday, I shot a nice 9 point whitetail buck with my BSW double rifle. They are very nice rifles.

Not To Worry, John...

I am enjoying where this is going.

I was about to post the same link that shows the fabulous collection of the Simson set barrels and receivers.

Now I don't have to find it; I'm lazy...

I would like very much to see that BSW double rifle. It is a bit laborious, but an online translator can work through the parts of the catalog you would need. Example: I used one to determine that the original trigger bow on my model was plastic, like the one on my gun. I had a noted gunsmith and German gun enthusiast tell me mine was "just a plastic replacement for the original horn".

It was a bit of sadistic fun to call him on it.
