"A Magnificent Museum Quality Cased 297-250 Watson Bros. Rook Rifle - 1880s - Minty"

Suggested to bring to this forum also ...

Hello All,

The most fun part of collecting guns is when you finally obtain an elusive treasure, and then you share your find with fellow collectors. I circled around this one for nearly 2 years, and finnally got it.

So, here's the details about this latest acquisition:

A Watson Brothers Rook Rifle - 297-250 Rook cal - Lightly Engraved - Side Lever - Ejector - 5 lbs 3 oz - 14-1/2" LOP - 26" Round Barrel - Island Front & Rear Sight - 1 Standing 2 Folding Rear Site marked: 50,100,150 - Presentation Stock - Checkered Butt - Horn Forend Tip & Grip Cap - Alligator Skin Case - Glass Oil Bottle - Parker Hale Patches

As you have seen in my various posts on this Forum, I posted about several Rook rifles in various calibers. But, this one is by far the Finest I've ever had the pleasure to own.

As always, your comments are welcome.

WOW - just look at how RICH that wood looks. That's the first word, came to mind on the colour and finish.
Such an interesting action for a British Rifle.
How's the bore/chamber condition?

Beautiful gun, even more beautiful case.
I'd definitely take that out for a hunt, be a great squirrel gun or bunny buster and a gun like that was ment to be hunted with.

This would be considered as a curio here in Queensland, because you can't buy factory ammunition then no firearms licence is required.
Very nice piece Buckstix - I hope she shoots as good as she looks!

Buckstix - would a .32 S&W or Colt Long case work?
It would have to be necked, of course.

Hello Daryl_S,
Thanks for the reply.

Bore has very slight signs of black powder use and chamber is excellent.

Hello 260rem,
Thanks for the reply.

You bet, and I intend to bring home a few squirrel and bunny tails. .. as well as a few feathers.

Hello 94x63mm,
Thanks for the reply.

I'll see how she shoots tomorrow.

Hello Daryl_S,
Thanks for the reply.

I don't think those are used to make the 297-250 Rook cases. Most will rework 22 Hornet brass. Buffalo Arms sells their reworked 22 Hornet brass for $1.27 each but its currently out of stock. RCC has their custom 297-250 rook brass in stock for $3.68 each. I don't have to rework any brass because I have several hundred pieces of correct brass from Bertram and also the reworked 22 Hornet brass from Buffalo Arms. I've been shooting this caliber for years loaded with a 50g 25acp bullet and 3.8g of 2400..
