Miniature Gibbs Farquharson details?
      #185164 - 04/07/11 06:57 AM

I am considering making a miniature version of my modified Gibbs styled Farkie and was looking for some feedback on desired size or details from those that know what they would like to be made.
Caliber choice/s,
finished weight with scope
grip dimensions, width - height.
Anything else that springs to mind

Also if anyone owns one an original and would be kind enough to post a picture with a scale rule next to the action so I can see rough dimensions, it would be appreciated. I know these actions are rare as the proverbial rocking horse dooo dooo but any help appreciated. I know Ross Seyfreid published an article regarding the resurrection of a miniature Gibbs in the Double Gun journal last Septeberish issue,2010. If anyone could scan and post any of the pics from that article it would be helpful. I have misplaced my Winfer book at the present time.

Thanks

Glenn

Anything rimmed. .218Bee/Hornet. 7x57R at the top end.

Due to the entry price (out of my reach) I think you need to assess your market first. What do they use ?

Tophet

Not sure on the rimmed, in some ways making it easier for someone to shoot would be good.

I was thinking .223, or .222. Yes, I know it is modern but
even those high end buyers do like to shoot things and .223 would make it very easy.

Agree 7mm a the high end and even that is maybe a bit big.

Glenn,

Don't you recon that Ross Seyfried would be glad to provide you with information about his minature Gibbs?

Curl,
Don't think he's that approachable and I suspect that he's one of those guys who only likes the old originals and not anything that may topple his beloveds from the top of the pole. I rang him a couple of years back and asked him to look at my website to see if he maybe interested in doing a review and never heard back from him. I guess I presumed he would be somewhat more enthusiastic about someone who had taken on the task of making Gibbs Farkies, albeit a heavily modified rendition. Not too keen on approaching him again really. He does have " a reputation" that I have been made aware of subsequent to that. And if you read the article he wrote on the Gibbs miniature "resurrection" you'd almost have to wonder if he has spent waay too much time on his remote "Elk Song" ranch by himself. (There are some absolute classic lines in there about having to find the courage to put his re-made metford rifled barrel in the lathe and clock it up to do the chambering work etc. It's worth reading, certainly unique) There will be other ways of getting the necessary information. I never have been much of a sychophant....

Cheers

Glenn

Sounds like someone who has become a legend in his own teacup !!!

I know he is knowledgeable and I know people who know him well and have hunted with him but you see it often in all fields.

That's why Graeme Wright, who shares all info is so great.

I think one of the reasons he (RS) like "other powders" is to be different !!!

Interesting. A smaller action, similar in size to Hagn small action, suitable for 222/223, 243, 6mm rem, 7-08, 308, 6,5x55, 6,5x57, r, 7x57, r, would be great. 2,8-3,0 kg kilos with scope or 2,2-2,4kg clean.

I doubt a small action would be as popular as "standard size" - don't make a tiny action. Custom gun makers who target the big bore and other exotic cartridges with their designs will often find the actual demand isn't that great - the devils advocate bureau in operation

Glenn,

Not sure if this is what you want, but one of our members, Mark Mitchell, builds the miniature Farquharsons in the UK from scratch and even owns the J Farquharson name.

Good hunting!
