I finally have her. She was made for the Earle of Cranbrook in 1926.

Congratulations, magnificent looking rifle.

How does it shoot?

Cheers

Thank you gentlemen,
and what kind offers. Gryphon, I had no idea the mormons had made it so far south. I'll be bringing her down your way, assuming I can work up a load in time for an April Redstag hunt on the south island of New Zealand. I have not shot it yet, hopefully by next weekend. I'll post the results when I have them.

Farquarson actions have always touched my heart. That H&H is one splendid rifle. If I ever was to buy another .30 cal. rifle, it would have to be one like that one - so, not likely. Very nice indeed.

Well a range report seems due. I'm having a hell of a time getting this rifle to slow down to its factory listed velocity of 2575 out of a 28" bbl. My first attempt was with H4831 and the second was Reloader 22. I know backing off these bulky powders can be trouble. I'm almost 10% under published loads for the belted version. 64 grains of reloader 22 gave me 2775fps, getting close now. A reduced load calculator tells me I need just under 58 grains. I'm unsure if this is too little powder to deliver consistant ignition. I may give alliant a call in the morning. I also just stubbled on some reloader15 loads and I have a can of that lying about from my .256 Westley. Well other than being a bit zippy she shoots great. More testing should settle her right in.

I talked to the guys at Alliant and have dropped back to 62gr of reloader22 for a velocity of 2675, I can live with it. Now for a bit of shooting this weekend to build some confidence, then off to kill red stags and bloody this thing. I'm also bringing a mauser custom I built in gunsmithing school in .25-06. I wish I chose a better caliber, but it looks damn good for my first build. Should be a fun trip, my first stag too!
