Unique enscription on MH
      #43740 - 11/12/05 11:25 PM

A friend of mine brought a Martini Henry .577/.450 rifle along to our last collector's meet, with a query. The firearm in question is a bog-standard Mk IV with the long lever, but it has a unique enscription engraved into the trigger-guard. Anyone recognize this script, or know what it means?
Thanks

Looks like it's one of the Nepalese cache. These guns have been trickling out of the there for years prior to IMA's big load.

Marrakai,

The closest Sanskrit equivalents of the letters would be: "Go Na Jhe Ne She De" though what they stand for is something that I cannot think of. Probably some kind of Nepali registration or treasury marking.

Good hunting!

OK guys, thanks: I'll pass that on. I tossed this query up on the Brit Militaria forums as well, and the general concensus there was Nepalese too. One member claimed to own two MHs similarly marked. ...and the recent IMA 'cache' was mentioned of course. Thanks for the attempted translation mehulkamdar, if anything else springs to mind I'm sure my friend would be gratefull for any extra info.
Cheers

I just found the translation...

"May the Bird of Paradise never use your punch bowl as a bird bath."

Sorry, Johnny Carson...
