Hello
What are your thoughts on East German combination guns? Is Q1 mark for export guns? I am thinking of buying one. Photos look very good, screws timed perfect, engraving looks good. Interested in your thoughts.
Thanks Mike

Simson (Suhl) also made cheap export shotguns. TradeexCanada has a lot of them for sale.

I'll have to post some pictures of my shotgun in. Probably a cheapie.

The action though looks very similar to a basic Merkel action, including double rifle actions. But probably slimmer.

Chances are the Simson was made in the same factory as the Merkel and is branded "Simson", much like Chevrolet and GMC trucks or the now gone Johnson/Evenrude outboard motors.

I've had many fine Simson Suhl shotguns and combination guns from East Germany. They were indistinguishable from Merkels.

Case in point is this nice Simson Suhl 16ga SXS.

Gun came yesterday, I am very satisfied, locks uptight, bores are excellent.
I don’t believe it has been used much, BUT there is a butt stock problem that needs addressing. The gun appears much like a Merkel, I would post photos, but haven’t mastered the skills required. My question is: there appears to be a screw under the trigger guard that is accessed by removing the guard and a screw under the action operating lever, are there any other screws that need to be removed to remove the butt stock? Hopefully my question makes sense.
Thanks Mike

Yes, there are more screws to remove: You will find one or two metal to metal screws on the underside of the action bar, in front of the triggerguard. Remove these too. Only now you should be able to remove action body and triggerplate from the stock.
Many German break open stocks were ruined by GIs in 1945 who tried to remove the stocks by forcefully pulling them out to the back like on a Winchester repeater.
BTW, a post-war GDR Simson looks exactly like a Merkel because both were the same then. Neither the Merkel nor the Simson companies existed any more. Both were “Socialised” and incorporated into the VEB Ernst Thaelmann Werke (named so for a communist "marthyr"). The ETW used the old respected names merely as brands for their products. As the Simson family in the USA still had the rights to their name, the ETW branded all their guns “Merkel” when destined for export to America. For export to other countries they branded all side by sides “Simson” and all over unders “Merkel”. The names did not matter: All those guns were made by the same men in the same factory.
That “1st Quality” mark is not related to the individual gun. Those quality grades were assigned to products of all sorts, not only guns but optics and even pickled cucumbers. It merely said: These ETW model of gun is a high quality product, fit for the world market.

If anyone knows of a line drawing, please let me know. I don’t want to make a mistake. Photos showing the screws to remove.
Thanks Mike

I have never mastered the skills necessary to post photos to this forum, I posted a photo and a further question on the German Gun Collectors Association Forum.
