A BPE with Alex Henry Rifling.

I can't see the photo well enough to see the bore size.

Nice pick up. From what I can tell, the bore looks good.

I'd guess the pre-rifling diameter to be the "52"/"53", which would be around 0.450", but I don't think there was a 52/53. Birmingham proofs and I'd like to see the rhombus stamp a little closer. There was a "50" and then the small bore rifles began with 0.451" and then 51.05 & 54.61.

If that stamp is a "53" then 450 BPE looks about right.

The bore / barrel just looks bigger to my eyes but in those days they built them stout.

Thank you guys , I have no idea what it is , I took a punt on it really , as it looked cool & I have not seen many Under Lever single shots !

One chap used a tape on the muzzle & rim cut , muzzle was 11mm , rim was 16mm , the other guy said 500 muzzle , so I was hoping for a .500BPE , but if 52-53 is .45Cal could be 500/450 of some type ?

The butt stock has a few chips , cracks & repairs at the butt plate end .

500/450 is certainly a possibility.

It could be any of the BPE cartridges so if the bore is definitely 450, it is well worth working it out what it out.

Can you get hold of any old 450 and 500 cases as that would be the easiest way to work them out ?

Bore looks really good.

2 things re the calibre :-

- That chamber looks like it has a shoulder on it and
- the chamber definately looks bigger than 450, 500 is
a possibility and 577 as well.

577 would make it a 577/450.

Crap , you are right , I couldn't see that shoulder in the dark photo , but looks like it now , not so good , as I was hoping for a 50Cal , I would hate it to be a 577/450 , exy case's & no good to me , even a short 500/450 would be a bugger !

Can you confirm that the stamp containing the diamond/rhombus has 500/C inside it?

Sarg

I still think you got a good pick up unless you over paid for it.

I am surprised that they can't tell you what it is ???

If it's in another country, try to get someone else to look at it for you.

Good pick up. I hadn't seen that as the photos are not that clear.

Ellenbr , I can not confirm any thing yet , but I will get my mate to look some more when here gets it, I hope it is a .500 of some type .

I don't know if I paid too much , but I paid more than I wanted to pay for it , as I think it needs a new butt stock to keep it as good as the rest of it , a 577BPE in a single would be great & a 500 would be OK !

Sarg

If you paid tommorow's price today, tommorow it will be yesterday's price.

Re the stock, unless it is cracked or broken and repaired,
stock guys can do wonderful restoration jobs and the few nicks
and dents in it add character.

If you re stock it, it might look very out of place on the gun unless the rest of it is redone as well.

I like what you purchased.

Neat little rifle -- Damascus barrel too!

Have fun with it, can't wait to see/hear more about it.

Well on the stock , I will post some pic's I have of it , I think the ammo must have been hard to find as the owner may have used the steel plated butt to kill most of the game

I have some more chamber details from the guy , .454 bore .654 base ? .727 rim ? looks bad for me on the caliber , but on the up side the bore is near mint he say's !

Added stock pic's

Well I've been having a play with this old girl now, it is in 577/450 (Bugger) was hoping for 500Ex No2 but that's the way it goes .

On the bright side bore is near mint, but what a prick of a cartridge to load in Nitro, never had so many squib & miss fire's in my life, a bit scary, thought I could do some damage, even got some BP worked great, but 85gr of Goex FFg & 400gr Rem slug kicked like a Mule & what a mess to clean, both case's & barrel !

I used Magtech 24ga brass shot shells, the first few went great & I got cocky & crumpled the next couple, I think I annealed them too much, still much cheaper than wrecking my 577NE cases !

Got a couple of loads to work now, but need more testing yet .

Sarg:
Should be easy enough to load for, we all do it for our Martini-Henrys. Bertram makes the cases, Lee dies are $150 (or were when I bought mine!) and I would suggest looking up the "Express" load that was favored for sporting purposes in the day, and for which the Walker was probably sighted.
I saved this info from an old post by pwm:
Quote:

in the 1936 Kynoch catalog: 90 grains black, 325 grain lead copper-tubed gives 1600 feet per sec.
44 grains cordite, 365 grain metal-based solid or copper-tubed gives 1425 feet per sec.

The ADI Handbook online is happy to recommend 37gr AR2207 under a 400gr lead bullet for 1300fps, so a few more grains of powder and a few less grains of lead should work out fine!
