Robert Hughes Farquharson 500/450 No.2 Musket

Time to get posting again!
This is a really fun rifle!
The exterior is very worn - lots of dings and such - but a fantastic bore! I have shot it with 85grs. of Shockey's Gold powder and .458" 350gr. soft jacket bullets from Hawk. Offhand it can keep them all in two inches at about 60yds. A total joy to load and shoot!

I am betting that this gun was finished by Turner for Hughes.

I had a chance to load and shoot this rifle again.
This time, I used some of the GOEX Olde Eynsford 1-1/2F black powder.
I was able to load 80grs which is 5gr less than with the Shockeys because I am using an Oxyoke wad with the black and no lube with the Shockeys.
I also switched to a 350gr. Berrys Bullets .458" bullet which is similar to the Hawk but copper plated rather than copper jacketed. The bullets seat in the fired cases with some vigorous thumb pressure so no press seating was needed - nice!

Results at 75yds were good (for me)
The targets are sideways. First set of six shots on the bottom target and the last four on the top target (which also has two holes from a .45ACP carbine that look like a left and right flier) so the second group is pretty good I thought.
Just one swab with a wet patch between groups. Then I shot another eight shots without cleaning and kept clay target accuracy at 50yds.
I like this Olde Eynsford powder.

Do you find this an interesting cartridge to load for? I am watching a rifle retailed by I. Hollis of Birmingham in this calibre using the Field's Patent on 1877, like a Martini block but with a side lever. It was sold in Australia originally and brought back to the UK a few years back. Current owner does not shoot it.....

Actually, by most accounts, the No.2 Musket variant seems to be the most forgiving to load for. Just about any reasonable load and bullet/lube combination shoots well.
Please keep us updated on your Field patent rifle. A few of us here on N.E. also have Fields.

Thank you for that. I will begin a conversation with the current owner...
