Original 1885 High and Low Wall Winchester Rifles

Is there anybody on this forum who has a fondness for these ? Any info or advice (and an indication of values) would be appreciated. I see one in .22 for sale for AUD $1500. Is this a reasonable value for a good condition example ?
What calibers should I avoid ?

.22 caliber Winchester single shots fall into two categories: the regular sporting rifles and the so called "Winder muskets". The latter were used for quasi military target rifles and had sights comparable to the Krag/Springfield rifles then in use. Some were fitted with wire mainsprings, rather than the flat springs mounted on the barrel.

The Winder muskets are more common, but neither one is likely to have a shootable bore, considering the fact that they predated non-corrosive primers by decades. Moreover, Winchester firing pins were located so that they fall on the portion of the rim supported by the extractor, which makes them unsuitable for development as a really accurate target rifle, as opposed to, say, Ballards, which have a good deal of accuracy potential.

$1500 US would be pretty steep for a Winchester single shot .22 lr in this country, unless it had some particular collector value. I suspect that they are far rarer in your location.

Is it a 22 centerfire or rimfire? As xausa has said, value will depend on a lot of factors; much more information would be needed before commenting on the price.

Thanks xausa and SharpsNitro. Since my post I have stumbled upon the Ballard website - Boy there are some pretty rifles there !!
I am certain the rifle I've enquired about is a .22 rimfire.
Having seen the Ballard site I'm almost a certain starter for one and will be making enquiries with AMEX card in hand this week I expect

I see one for sale on Used Guns in 32/20 "The Stinger" $990 , one in 22K Hornet would be cool , or 17 Ackley Hornet !
