Drilling calibres in Australia
      #169915 - 20/10/10 09:36 AM

I have a Sauer M3000 Drilling in 12x12/9.3x74R this is the only drilling in this calibre I have seen in Australia, I have seen more double rifles than drillings!, I have seen 6.5 and 7 mm but not 9.3mm has any one seen or heard of another in this calibre? Thanks

cheers
Steve

IIRC I saw one at a gun show here several years ago that was a 12 X 12 X 30-06. I'm pretty sure it was a Sauer.

RLI,

I have one (16X16/9.3X74R) and would imagine there are many more as the 9.3X74R is a very desirable chambering. I can't say that I have seen very many though. I'm curious, how long are your barrels?

I believe the current production Merkel can be had in 12 x 12 x 9.3x74R. I would think the Verney-Carron is also available.

I've seen or heard of them in 7x57 (perhaps rimmed), 8mm (presume 8x57 or 8x57R), 6.5x57R and .30-06. Also something like .222 too.

I believe I have heard of another 9.3x74R but can't remember whom it was. Not that long ago ie recently 2 years or so.

Good calibre for medium game use.

I have heard of a PH in Zim who uses a Sauer 12x12/9.3x74R on wounded leopard, it would just about be ideal for this I would think.

I seem to recall a Victorian inhabitant of another forum recently imported such a drillinge earlier this year, or do you have different usernames on different forums?

As far as I know Sauer stopped production on the 3000 at the end of the eighties and not that many were brought in by the Sauer dealer. Clayton's still had a M3000 in 12/12/6.5x57R on the wall lasttime I was there, and I've recently heard of a couple of higher grade M3000's in 7x65R & 8x57IRS being privately imported for less than Clayton's asking price.

Merkel do indeed still list the 9.3x74R in their 96K only problem is the last importer recently tripped on a rainbow and I've yet to hear who the new one is

With regard to the Zim PH using a 12x12x9.3X74R as a backup Leopard weapon, I would think it would be a splendid choice providing he was proficient in the use of his selectors. That combo is a bunch of easy to maneuver fire power that can be delivered in a short amount of time.

G'day Steve,

Here's a few pics of my old drilling. Its a double 16ga 2 1/2" with a 9.3 x 72R underneath. The 72R has nowhere near the punch of the 74 but it throws a 200gr pill at a bit over 2000fps so it does still put them down O.K. The scope is original to the gun and overall its in very nice order.

G'day Steve,
from the proof marks, it passed proof in Sept. 1924. It has cocking indicators, set trigger with the rifle selector behind the top lever which also raises the rear sight. Saftey is the Greener type. Other than 1 other I found on the web, this is the only other drilling that I've seen made on the Echoldts patent, which makes the gun a self opener. With Echoldts system, the rear barrel lump, when closing the gun, pushes down a lever which causes the other end to load up the main springs [ if you look at the pic of the bottom of the action, the hatched area of the rear lump is really the lever and the small rectangle in front of this being the actual rear lump]. Even after firing, the spings put enough tension on the lever to help with the opening of the barrels. This of cause makes the gun a bit harder to close, but it doesn't take too long to get the knack. I make pills for this from 200gr Hornady .358 dia. projectiles [ finished size 363 dia. ] which I bump up in a swage I made. Costs a HEAP less than RWS stuff.
Regards,
Ron.

underlever,

Thank you for posting the pictures of your drilling, very nice. Thanks also for posting the pictures depicting how the action works, nice follow-up.
