All or almost all ridiculous over-large big "pipes" that gross out the top of a decent rifle.

Funny how so many guys waffle on about how light a "mountain" or "backpacking" rifle must be, but usually put on some bazooka sized scope on top of it.

Ha ha, have to read the article though to see which irrigation pipe is best on top of one of my rifles.

Agree--see some do that and shake my head..put a 2 lb scope on a 5 lb rifle..

IN reviewing this the Swaro and Leupold are both under 20oz..which is not overly heavy..I have used many of the Leupolds, Swaro's and Zeiss through the years and NO will not mount a heavy scope on my hunting rifle..ie; Nightforce...I do have a couple NF's on target guns..but not a carry gun..each to their own...

Was surprised on the info that the NF had some leakage in the weather category..have never seen a bad comment about their quality before other than their weight..

As to several of the others, my personal belief is life is too short to use a Bushnell or similar quality.. won't do that either...I don't even put them on my 22 rimfire..

I saw a 458 winchester magnum for sale recently that had a 6x to 18x scope mounted on it!

Makes you wonder if people value balance and handling qualities any more. Not important I guess if all you do is lug the rifle from the car to the shooting bench.

Looking at some scopes, I realise I am behind the times with now 34mm scope tubes being made. For the 1-8x type new variables.

And huge prices to add as well.

A 6 X 18 on a .458?!!!

What were they trying to do? Shoot the ticks off a buffalo's ass at 300 yards!!!

Or maybe they just had a death wish?

I put a Leupold VX-6 2-12 with a fire dot on my 375H&H last year before hunting in Cameroon ..wasn't sure how far the shots would be and knew I was primarily hunting plains game..worked really well, in fact plan to leave it on for now..shot game from 30 yards to slightly over 200 ..

G'Day Fella's,

Thanks for sharing Ripp.

I have a varied array of all kinds of quality scopes but for general hunting, give me a Leupold 2.5-8 x 36mm any day (I think I have four or five of them).

Doh!
