10 bore H&H Paradox

I bought this 10 bore Paradox a few years ago in quite poor condition and recently had it sympathetically (I hope!) restored

One of the rarest (2? made) but least desirable of the Paradoxes this 1886 version was probably set up as the original idea for a Paradox, equally used as a shotgun or lightweight rifle

It soon became clear that the primary advantage (and selling point) was as a lighter weight accurate rifle that could occasionally used as a shotgun, so the heavier guns/loads became more popular

The introduction of the heavy 12 bore Paradox with 4 1/2 dram powder load effectively made thes 10 bores obsolete, which resulted in the heavy 10 bore with 6, then 8 dram loads, a different beast altogether

This gun was probably built on a shotgun action by W&C Scott or Philip Webley, as were many of H&H guns/Rifles until 1892 and their new factory

The top lever action, 30 inch barrels (none made according to the Paradox book), straight stock and light(ish) weight of 8 lbs 10 oz made it a true combination gun, if not the best for large game

The only thing I do not like is the current fad of blacking the top lever

I had the engraving refreshed before blacking the barrels

There was almost no chequering left, the guy did well to get it this good

Also with the fore end. It has the Deeley and Edge lock, later the heavy rifles had the lever fore end

Bores are perfect
