The look in Granger's eye in the first picture is all business! Classic!

That´s a coincidence. I was at the Holland shooting school last week to test the .500 after we adjusted the rear sight, on the way there with Pat I stopped at the premises of the two chaps, father and son, who do all the barrel blacking for Holland, Purdey, Westley et al, very dickensian place, lovely blokes, both ex Holland, the fathers´ (who is 74 years old) grandfather worked at Hollands. fascinating process but the father had finished the double rifle that was given to Stewart Grainger who apparently had a clause in his contract the film producers would provide him with a rifle as a present ! Nice pressie, best, Mike

It often shows when the actor actually knows how to shoot doesn't it. None of this "quaint" modern gangsta holds we see today, Imagine Grangster steely eyed trying to shoot a double rifle held sideways .... .... just doesn't work does it?! Not pukka, chaps.

I would guess Granger would have been a guy to go on more than one real safari during his life.

Does it look like the guy with the tie on is holding a "Paradox" ? It looks like the rear site is folded down like on a "Paradox" . Maybe it's just a bad pic (or my bad eyes).

He may know how to shoot but he doesn't know how to shoot an 8 Bore. The way he is letting the barrels sit on his hand instead of wrapping them is a recipe for disaster.

A nice pose though for the camera.

Yep! Those were my thoughts exactly when saw it, but it is such a classic movie I cut'em a ton of slack. At least back then the actually went to Africa to film some of it, rather than it all being on a studio back lot or today's CGI junk, and they portray hunting as perfectly reasonable.

As an aside, even after I tell folks how they have to hold the barrels when shooting one of my guns I usually have to show them and emphasize that they really, really, really do want to hold on. All a part of the fun!

Bob

I didn't know that. I wonder how I held the .600 NE when shooting it. Guess I took a firm hold naturally.
