The DGJ, Winter 2010, v 21 - Issue 4, has a great new article by Sherman Bell on loading for the Paradox.

You don't have any? Precision Reloading or Ballistic Products but they are back ordered from time to time.

15mm cork wads [Re: gatsby]
      #173333 - 18/12/10 12:09 PM

They are stocked by two foreign reloading product dealers. Neither will ship to the US even though shot and shotshell wads are not included on the ban on ammunition and metalic reloading components.

They are listed as the 15mm Cork wads.

Italy - http://www.siarm.com/index.php?cPath=2_24_29_144&osCsid=7ab1a1ee5af6ec25a65496e8d17ef866

Who's going, how about a group order???!!!

Make or buy a punch and order your cork sheet from McMaster.com or similar.
You will give yourself a great deal of freedom if you do.

I make all my bore-rifle consumables besides powder and primers - including brass for some of my rifles.
Punching felt and cork sheet is simple and cost-effective.

Tinker,

I was looking at cork sheet and punches. My understanding is that to punch 5/8" material one should use a punch chucked in a drill press. Most punches will bottom out on material that thick, are only available in 3/4", plus they have square shanks that will not fit the common Jacobs chuck.

Any comment?

Gatsby, it's the only way to go!

I typically make my own punches, although I also have some industrial 'arch' type punches as often seen in gun-case tool kits. I also have some with bore markings (24, 16, 10, etc) which likely came from the gun trade.

For drill-press punches, you can use store-bought hole saws and grind the teeth back and sharpen the end of the remaining tube. The wall thickness is thin, and if you don't grind all the way through the high speed steel end of the (bi-metal) hole saw you will have a very tough cutting edge.
I turn them in the lathe with carbide or ceramic cutters.

Such a hole-punch spinning in a hole saw arbor can make quick, accurate, and repeatable work of the wad or gas-seal cutting process.

Again, it's cheap and easy and it gets you set up for the long haul.

By the way, McMaster-Carr ( mcmaster.com ) stocks them in 15mm.

Cheers

Tinker

Good idea, thanks.

BTW, 15mm is the height of the wad offered overseas = 0.59"

You're welcome.

Righty-O on the fifteen millimeter number.
Duh.

Go to the McMaster-Carr website and shop for your cork material and whatever diameter of punch stock you desire.
Also note that there is likely more than one type of cork sheet available on that site.
They have a great deal of selection and an unfathomable selection of gasket materials (like the cork you seek) and other industrial equipment and supplies.
A true gold-mine for the manufacturing, engineering, and maintenance trades.

T-

Yes, I've had an account there for 10 years. Mcmaster is an absolute must. No frustrating trips to 5 different hardware stores every weekend only to come home either empty handed or with some stuff you settled for. Just order and exactly what you are looking for and it magically appears on your doorstep the very next day.

But for cork, I found this place the other day and think it might be just about right - http://www.thefeltstore.com/ - no 5/8" but 3/8, 1/2, 3/4 and 1"

Something that works well with a hand drill or bench drill, is a sharpened hole saw. The cup-shaped, red in colour hole saws are heavily walled and sturdy as well. Grind the teeth off and sharped the edge, angle on the outside, of course, just as would would an arch punch.
