I shot the King Kong 2 bore today!
      #131526 - 05/04/09 04:31 PM

I was able to get out and shoot the King Kong 36" barrelled 2 bore today. We had a beautiful afternoon to go shooting. We used Pioneer FFG as the powder, which shoots about 15% hotter than black powder. I started with an equivalent black powder load of 225 grains and we worked up to a pretty stout load of 425 grain blk. pdr. equiv. load. According to my calculations, the max load we used pushed a 3500 grain ball to 1170 ft/sec for about 10600 ft.lbs of energy. The recoil was appx. 330 ft.lbs at 31 ft/sec. It kicked pretty hard. My chronograph crapped out before we were finished, but with past load data and our load progression today, we arrived at the above figures. I have some pictures posted on accurate .reloading.com under big bores, and have 4 short videos of us shooting the gun. I am currently having trouble getting the videos loaded to where they can be easily read on the computer. I am getting help tomorrow morning. If I can get it all together, can I email all the pictures and the 4 videos to someone to post here? Let me know if you can help out. thanks

330 pounds of recoil- oh my ! too much for me. More power to you, Bigdog. 15 1/2 drams! - that ought to be a good concrete block killer.

Send 'em to me, Bigdog - I'm in here every day, sometimes 2 or 3 times, depending on the weather - I'll get them posted for you.

You actually fired it?
And lived to tell the story? It didn't kick you into last year?

szihn,
The full loads kicked more than any other gun I have fired. Including the 4 bore and the 700 nitro, and the 700 AHR, and the 600 OK. The 600 OK and the 700 AHR do both have great brakes on them. But I am still here and doing fine. Not even a bruise on the shoulder! I was so stoked after shooting it yesterday. I get a lot of satisfaction out of taking out a new gun for the very first time. You just have that hesitant feeling when you are firing a big one off for the first time. You are not quite sure if it is going to kick you butt or not. Makes your heart beat a little bit faster!

Tinker, thanks for posting the pics, Daryl is going to try to put the videos on tomorrow for me. I finally got them sent to him tonight. The flatter ball was cut out of a tree right at 10" deep. The shell between the 2 balls is a 9mm for size comparison. While the 4 big holes are far apart, we had several targets in that area through the day. It is pretty easy to see the 2 bore holes! A couple of guys flinched a few times but overall it was a fun afternoon of shooting. We shot a lot of smaller caliber handguns too.

Here are the videos. That's one rifle I have absolutely no desire to shoot - to hold and admire, yes - to shoot, not on your life. Even a 4 bore is to much for this old broken guy. 30 rounds from my .375 last Saturday was enough - but a LOT easier than 1 round from Big Dog's hand-held cannon. About 40 pounds of recoil compared to 300+ - OUCH!

Bigdog- I posted some pictures of this over on www.americanlongrifles.com in the shooting threads - hope you don't mind.

I am assuming the slightly flattened balls were recovered from the dirt of the backstop.

Daryl, no problem on the posts to another sight. The flattened ball was cut out of a tree trunk. It was 10" deep in the trunk

Ha!! You get used to it. But as they say, its amazing what you can get used too. The 2 bore is doable without bodily damage. I think everyone should call Steve and get one ordered!! They take a while to build.

I dont understand the bad opinion about a cartridge like the 460WM, a cartridge for hunting and not a toy's for big boy's!

that really stings you, just be happy about your choice, just as big dog is happy about his.

peter

p.s. a 2 bore is by no means a toy

Grandvenure,
I think the 460 Weatherby gets a bad rap because some people had trouble with the cartridge sticking on ejection during really hot weather in Africa. The 460 is now factory loaded at 100 ft/sec lower than it used to be. It is now at 2600 ft/sec.With a 500 grain bullet, still all you need by a long shot. I have a 460 Weatherby and like it a lot. Go with what you like and be happy with it. We all have different opinions on the guns and cartridges we like the best. My problem is I like them all!! Some novices buy a 460, most powerful you know, and have no idea how to shoot it and control it. Beginners think if they have a Weatherby, they know everything. It kind of turns some hunters off. I am not talking about all new commers, just a few that act like know it alls.
