10 bore manton goes into the air ..slideshow!!
      #98086 - 02/03/08 07:17 AM

I have now finally got loaded some granates for the 10 bore manton. I still haven`t heard from Rocky mountain yet...so I have got some plastik hulls 3.5" instead, shorten .25".
My first load will only be 200 grain Swiss No 4 (1,5FG) so I can feel how the recoil is taken by the gun...but the next one will be fullpower loads of 270 grain (10 dram). I`LL keep you all posted for sure. If anyone has some last words for me, it might be a good idea to say èm now...hahaha

Fill us in more!!

Billede???

As for last words, all I can say is that a can of powder isn't going to last too long at the rate you are going to burn it!!

The recoil will be healthy - or not, but it will definitely be there. Sounds like fun. Noting better than burning the black from a bore gun to get a 'feel' for the gun.
; The most I burned was 191gr. or 7 drams of 2f GOEX and that kicked plenty.

The moment of truth!!!!!!!!!!!.

Starting with my "babyloads" of 200grain 1.5FG swiss and a 900grain bullet both bullets strucked exactly at point of aim at 25 meters almost touching eachother ...
..now I was getting warmed up for truly "elephantloads".....RECOIL was there NO QUESTION.
Both shots touched eachother sitting 3 inches below and a little to the left.
Pictures was taken, and will be e-mailed to me later...I will post them for sure.
Starting from litteratly rock bottom in this doublerifle-thing, I was truly amazed. I had bullets that were undersized (.775 versus .793)I had to use teflontape to add more bulletdiameter...but it worked!!!. The barrels after shooting 8 shots was a little messy only and very easy to clean. I had not use any kind of bulletlubes for what so ever. I used shotgun primers by winchester, which I was a little affraid could not ignite 270grain fullpower elephantload...
I can only confess that my doublerifle debut have went well
A friend of mine brought his .500 Jeffery which I also shot. There are more muzzlelift with the 10 bore double.(more smoke too..hahaha).
The doubleriflebug has strucked me for sure..Life has just begun..

Aoudns good so far. Just a suggestion, trackofthewolf.com has oxyoke fibre wads and walters vegetable wads. The OxYokes can be had lubed and other wise. I've found them to be good for lubing when BP loads are used as in ctg. guns.
: Masking tape can also be used to increase the diameter of undersize bullets. Works for us. RB's - less recoil, higher velocity. Depends on what the rifle wants.
: Shotshell primers are just fine for BP. It is the easiest of all powders to ignite.
; BTW - Swiss powder is roughly 20% stronger than GOEX. It actually approximates the better English powders, power wise.

Everyone uses shooting glasses or shatter resistant eyewear don't they? This is something that should be automatic - something you don't even have to think about - you do it automatically.

I have just ordered 40 pcs of 3.25" brass from Rocky Mountain Cartridge. A chambercast was made up to make perfect brass after. As I have been a doublerifle owner for now 2 months now, I grow more found for these old borerifles. I know one day I will get a modern doublerifle from 1920`s in a Nitrocaliber for sure.
Yes...the blackpowder smoke can mess up your day at the shootingrange, if caught in ones eyes....I have tried it . I will next time I have the brass cases and the correct size bullet make up some smokeless loads using blue dot powder.

This really deserves a thread of its own!

Listen to these guys!

I learned about molten sulphur embers in the eye while goose-shooting with BP under flight-paths....
Firing vertically up without eye protection!
Can't believe I did that! How the hell did they get away with it in Edwardian times? No shooting glasses visible in "The Big Shots"!
I now have a scarred cornea, by great good fortune off to one side but I could easily have suffered impaired vision had it centred over the pupil!

Apologies for the thread-hijack, now back to the marvellous Manton....

Congratulations, and very well done! There is no turning back for you now, both black powder _and_ double rifles are addicting!
