no hammers or case but othervice spot on.

ALEX HENRY
THE ACTION, STOCK AND FORE-END ONLY OF A 12-BORE SIDELOCK NON-EJECTOR RIFLE, NO. 5040
the frame, backlocks and snap action underlever with scroll engraving, 14 1/4-inch figured stock, probably a replacement with pistol grip, cheekpiece and recoil pad

it is off face, and needs some tlc, but now i have a composed pair of A. henry double rifles with 3 barrel sets. DAMN i need a case for them now

but the coolness factor of this setup is very high for me.

12 bore rifle
20/577 A. Henry
450/400 3,25" NE

that should take care of anything big or small.

cheers

peter

Peter-

That looks like a great box of treats.
Sure to give you 'hours of smoking pleasure'!
How are the various bores?

DANG! I was just guessing.
Extremely cool...just what I need.
I am finding myself more and more interested in well-used original guns rather than little used case queens these days.
This one certainly fits the former description!
Get this one back to mechanical fitness and start writing the next chapter!
Great find! I'm jealous!

tinker

the first one i got a few years ago:

http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=82704&page=0&fpart=1&vc=1

and now this one, with the 12 gauge barrels. i cant wait to fire it at something.
according to the auction house it is off face but the bores are decent, we will see when it gets here.

huvius: im sitting here and cant belive how lucky i was the hammer price were 700£

LIFE IS GOOD

hopefully i can get to know the load tommorow, thats one of the nice things about AH's is the books still exist, and they put the regulating load in there most of the time.

anybody care to venture a guess of the load:

i thing at least 6,5 drams of black and a short conical of some sort.

but your guess would proberly be better than mine, so guess away.

the gun would be a 10 pounder.

cheers

Peter-

What's the barrel length?
That's ten pounds no ounces?
What is the rifling profile?
What do the sights look like?

My initial thought is four or four and a half drams and spherical ball, but that's off-the-cuff without knowing the chamber length or barrel length. It appears to be a light sporting rifle to me, not so much the elephant killer.
Note the narrow breech, very open grip, thin wrist, and not excessively long action bar.

these are just my guesswork, but here goes.

barrel lenght 28-30"

that would be around 10 pounds(im going from my 20/577 now)

proberly henry rifling.

proberly express sights.

please remember that i havent seen it yet, but i know the action quite well, it has a size that easy can accomendate a 10 bore(BIG actions)

remember that alex henry were the late black powder era roy weatherby. for that time he were really pushing it with his other loads, but we will know tommorow for sure
i will see if i can snap a picture of the one i have here next to a 12/70, so you can see the size of the action.

cheers

Peter-

I'm interested to see the barrel flats - looking at the rib extension I wonder if they're original to the gun.
The rib extension appears a bit different from the rest of what I can see of the barrel set, as if it had been added.

Any way you cut it, it looks like you got a great price on a very cool and fun project!

Tom Armbrust has documented some very entertaining stunts with absolutely massive overloads in rusted-to-death, pitted beyond belief, dented to hell, crap old twist-iron barrel sets on his destruction testing setup, with loads he's tested in his pressure guns -- where the sewer-pipe barrels breezed through the exercise.

I'm sure that whatever that rifle was originally set up for can be run in it once it's put back to proper operating condition again.

This should be lots of fun for you!!

I will note, there's nothing like the sound of a big bore rifle echoing through the crags and canyons of our Northern California mountains, there is little else that will quiet the voices of the hounds...

Cheers

im working overtime to get the oberwacthmeister to approve of the plan, just a few last details to fix. the 12 bore should be enough for a black bear right ?

best regards

Peter-

That perspective is quite the eye-opener!
I'm interested to see this most recent addition to your pile next to the one you have.

What about the listing where it says, "THE ACTION, STOCK AND FORE-END ONLY"?

I take that to mean the barrels are stuffed and will not be sent with the rifle. Am I mistaken?

What a pity that marvellous AH sidelock has had such a hard life: it would have been a marvellous thing when well cared-for. Still, we shouldn't begrudge the circumstances that bring these wonderful old guns within reach. No doubt you will have a ton of fun bringing her back up, peter.

I too get the greatest satisfaction from returning a weatherbeaten old campaigner to the hunting field!

it means that the barrels are out of prof and can only go to a gunmaker for fixing before reprof.

in this case it is the chambers that dont fit the description of a 2008 12 gauge chamber

best

marrakai

this one looks like it will be a quicker fix to take her back, and ammo wice it will be a walk in the park to get the components for it.

i talked to www.dicksonandmacnaughton.com today and the serial number must be worn because 5040 is a single shot but they are so cool that they called sothebyes to get the details right, but we will get them tommorow.

as of now all i know is that, it were a best gun, as that was the only choise, that you got with that action. if im lucky it should be bellowing late january.

NEW info, Just in. it seems that the serial no is: 6840 that means 28" barrels 2,5" chambers
no regulation loads, but it might be on the barrels though(fingers crossed).

more tommorow

cheers

peter

small update:

the serial number is 5840 dickson and macnaughton is on it as we speak, these people are such a pleasure to talk to, and service oriented as i were the king of scandinavia himself

i should get the info shortly, and will post as soon as i get it.

i recived this from gavin just an hour ago, dosent show much but it will do until i get better pic's.

i think that they misrepresented the rifle quite a bit, because where the caliber states the bore, IT SAYS 11 which should make it a 10 BORE RIFLE
hmmm i think i have to return it NAAAAAWWWWWW

Peter-

Oh, how terrible!
You must be so distraught and confused.
I cannot imagine the distress you must be feeling about that confusion on the rifle's caliber.

I will be happy to clear things up for you, simply crate the rifle and send it to my Oakland California address.
I will have it shooting nicely for you by the time you arrive for your black bear hunt!
