Heavy Bench Gun
      #311076 - 26/01/18 10:02 AM

All of my guns are hunting oriented, until this week. Got my first pure target rifle. From the poor Internet pictures I knew it was a heavy barreled target rifle and I was expecting something that weighed 12 pounds or so. Imagine my surprise to unpack this 21 pound monster!

It has a 36 inch untapered barrel that is 1.5 inches in diameter. Six grooves with a bore diameter of.438 inches. Twist is one turn in 48 inches.

The gun is totally unmarked. Lyman sights. No half cock notch. Lock and set triggers work perfectly. First step was to disassemble and clean. Only challenge was the old brass alloy nipple which was stuck fast. A bit of gentle heat fixed that and the nipple was replaced. Everything looks good. Someone did a good job putting it together.

Once it passed inspection, I realized I had a .433 Lee round ball mould somewhere. Just about perfect for the .438 bore. So balls were cast and patches cut. I can't get to the shooting range so I shot off a cardboard box on the patio table. Used 70 grains of 2f goex. Two shots at 35 yards. Ok, maybe it was just luck, but the holes touched right at the point of aim! This is going to be fun!

Very interesting, cordite.

You could contact Dan Pharris - I think in Hamilton, now, not sure.
In the summer, they run a plank shoot in Montana and Wyoming - you've now got the gun for it.

I think this barrel has a bit of choke in it. A tightly patched jag goes down smoothly and back out smoothly to about 2 inches from the muzzle then gets tight. Happens every time, definitely seems to be some constriction at the muzzle end.

According to what I have read in Ned Roberts book, some of those rifles would have had a choked bore, and possibly progressive twist rifling. I am guessing what you have there is a " chunk gun" for shooting off a plank at 60 or more yards. It took me a while to ask what a chunk gun was, a rather unique American match. Dutch Shoultz dry patch method of loading should be ideal for that rifle.

Cheers
