I picked up a nice .72 at the local pawn shop recently. Man that rifling is shallow! My .715 balls are gonna be tight for sure!!! Any body have any tips on loading and shooting these? (except get a shoulder pad!)....Thanks, Ed

Yeah, I have one in .54 and they are VERY tight...... My Lyman .54 flinty takes patched balls with a degree of tightness that I would typically expect of a front stuffer. Use the same balls and patches in the Pedersoli and I feel like getting out my ball peen hammer to aid in seating the balls...... The Kodiak is damned tight but I can’t complain about the accuracy nor can I complain about the regulation....

I had a 58 cal Kodiak DR which was great fun to shoot. I shot Hornady 525 gr Great Plains conical bullets with 120 gr Triple 7 (measured by volume).

I bought the gun after reading an article in DGJ about hunting with the 58 cal Kodiak DR. Unfortunately, I did not hunt with this rifle.

I would believe that the 12 ga would be nice to shoot.

Hi Ed. You know my preferences in regards patches, etc.
I would certainly test that rifle with the .715's for sure.

My Kodiak .58 had about .008" depth rifling & it used 8 and 10 oz. denim quite easily, with a .574" ball in pure lead.

I measure those denims at .019" and .0225" with my calipers.

Different brands will vary, of course. Joanne's Fabrics in the States has a wide range of suitable cloths.

I would drop a light down the bores to have a look.

A lot of guys that bought those, used phony powders in them, Pyrodex and/or T7.

Daryl, I scoped it before I bought it, the bore is pristine. The rifling is VERY shallow, not more than .004 I bet! gonna cast up some pure .715's and give her a try....

Interestingly shallow. Have you measured the twist, Ed?
With the .715" soft ball, the 8oz denim should work fine.
I would use a .690" and thick patch with a hardened ball. Lee makes that size.

Daryl, No I haven't measured the twist, They a supposed to be 1-75. Pedersoli recommends a .715 ball on their website. I do have a .690 mold and a bunch of WW balls already cast up, and some pretty thick patching material I was gonna try that too. It should be interesting I am told they need 120 grns or more to shoot good,,,Now I need the weather to clear, had freezing rain last night and snow expected this weekend

I have heard the same about powder charge, with loads up to 175gr. T-7 being cited.
That will kick a bit and likely the equivalence to the old 7 dram charge for ctg. 12 bore RB loads of 191gr.
That one is quite brutal in a 8 pound SxS.

I would personally hope for a decent shooting load in the 130 to 150gr. 2F GOEX range if using the 14 bore ball.

I had one. Shot the best with a .715 ball and a thin patch. As I recall, I ended up with 120 to 140 grains of 2f being the best load. The gun is heavy so recoil is reasonable at that level. I ended up selling mine as the regulation was never satisfactory. One barrel always wanted to print several inches above the other.

I found with mine, a too-light charge (3 drams) put the barrels(right) one above the other by about 2 1/2" at 50 yards, increasing 10 gr. no change, then 20 gr.(100gr.) brought the barrels together at 50 - into the same group. Then another 10gr.(110gr.) made them shoot parallel. Another 10 gr. over that to 120gr., made them diverge and reverse the high shooting, left over right.
I wanted it to shoot well with 120gr. to 130gr., as a heavy game hunter, it would not, so I sold it.
5 shots in the group - discounting the flinch.

I changed from the ticking patch, which was .021" to a 10oz. denim at .0225" and that small change, brought the barrels together at 50 yards.

Daryl, I hope I can get mine to regulate as well. If I read the targets right you were using a .562 ball in this .58 cal rifle., that would be a 258 grain ball (in WW) and propelling it with 100 grains of powder, seems to me that load would put the hurt an any animal in NA that you wanted to take!!!?????,,,Thanks for all the info...Ed

I later switched to a .574" RB, with the same patch. These ran 280gr. average and shot the same.

Being able to remove one of the company's rear sights was a blessing, though. Firing a right and quick left on the gongs was a blast.

The 100gr. charge would have been fine for deer, but I wanted more for moose and possibly the grizzly that lived in my favourite muley deer and moose area. Too, a rifle like this should have a point blank range of 130yards. Makes it easier in these parts with large cut timber blocks.

This to keep in mind, it sometimes doesn't take much to change the way the gun reacts. I made sure that when I shot it, I held the forend in my left hand, with the back of my hand on the bench rest bag. No bag at the rear. I found it then shot identically as when shot offhand.

The 2 in the bullseye were with the load that was shooting different elevations, yet by holding appropriately, I was able to put right and left almost together.

Forsyth spoke of this as using "aiming dodges" to make a poor shooting double to appear to be properly regulated.

So much better when the barrels shoot together. I did some work on the nipples, and fences.

as received - long nipples, hammers not cupping the fences and ruddy stain and finish with too much bright metal.
I found cold blue to darken their shiny stuff, quite nicely.
