Commercial Mauser Serial number dates

Apologies if this topic has been covered before.I simply see a error code each time I attempt to use the search box on this forum.

I posted photo's recently of my "mystery Mauser".The Rifle has a four digit serial number "50XX".

Is there any way of telling its age from that number?

Commercail Mauser Sporters are easily dated from a serial number.
Suggest you repost some detailed pics and we can help you

If the rifle you are referring to is the below one, for which you have already posted links (but not photos), she is obviously of the Mauser 98-type, of which numerous rifles were manufactured by different companies; however in the absence of any specific Mauser factory marking ("Waffenfabrik Mauser ..." or "Mauser-Werke AG ..." depending on period) nothing can't really relate her to a Mauser sporting rifle. If she was one, a serial number in the range of 5000 would date her to c. 1902, according to information from Jon Speed's book.

To add to the confusion, my understanding is that military Mausers were dated and the serial numbers started all over from 0001 each year, unlike the commercial Mausers, whose serial numbers continued to grow until the end of World War II, and even afterwards, if you count the Mausers assembled from pre-existing parts by Walter Röll.
