Convert Parker Hale 30:06 to 358 Norma magnum
      #270106 - 07/09/15 05:07 PM

Hi Team
Ive got a Parker Hale 1000 in 30:06. As I understand it my Parker Hale has a standard commercial Mauser 98 action. I want to convert it to 358 Norma Magnum. No... Im not interested in 35 Whelan or anything else. I know what I want and Im happy to punish myself with the recoil. It makes me a better person. I understand the 358 Norma will cycle thru a standard Mauser action such as the one in my Parker Hale. IS THAT CORRECT? Also apart from opening out the bolt face is/are there any other trick/traps I need to be aware of when I discuss this with my gunsmith?
Thanks in anticipation

It may need some adjustment to the feed rails to feed reliably, your gunsmith will probably require some dummy rounds to test this with.

Otherwise, it's a great calibre, perfect for a sambar thumper!

Great, thank you, now all I have to do is pick some rounds from somewhere

Hi,
If you can't find any brass locally, try Rebel Gunworks in Brisbane. I had one built years ago on a VZ24 action and had no problems. It is a great calibre. I formed my first lot of cases from 308Norma Magnum cases, so that may also be an option.
Good luck, and keep us posted on the progress.

With the proper neck expander, it's easy to form .358 Norma Magnum cases from 7mm Remington Magnum brass.

Gentlemen
all good information and thank you all very much for all the support and feedback. However Ive come across my first snag. The gunsmith I was going to use in Sth Aus does not have a set of 358 reamers, does anyone know of any gunsmiths in Australia that might have the skills (and reamers)to do the job?
Im going to re-barrel but obviously Ive got to get the barrel chambered correctly and as said, the gunsmith I was going to use does not have the reamers.

Also does anyone have any thoughts about twist. I like a heavy projectile so Im going to go 250 grains and was thinking 1:12 but would I have to go that tight?
Cheers and thanks in anticipation

My own 358 NM is a P Hale.

Its a real hammer and has rolled plenty of sambar.

Magnum Sports in Sydney have Norma 358 brass as I type.

My PH 1200 was a .308 Win before being converted to .308NM.
Was a bit of work to open up rails / bolt etc but works just fine; had it for over 30 years now.
.358NM is just more of a good thing!
Hope you get it going soon Bidyanus1

I liked my .358 Norma Mag, but lamented the dropping of the 280gr.RN by Hornady. I'd only found 4 boxes of them and burned them up shooting coyotes - they worked well.
