Pictures needed, claw mounts
      #260226 - 10/02/15 10:46 AM

Hello,
I posted on the Mauser photo forum about a Mauser sporter I am planning a build on. It came with claw mounts but no rings. John303 suggested I get some measurements and pictures of the ring claws from somebody and attempt to build and fit my own. I would like to try this and would appreciate it if somebody could take some measurements and pictures to base the new ones from. I've attached a photo of what Im working with. Thanks for the help, Jess

I was you would take old parts like this

http://egun.de/market/item.php?id=5302869
http://egun.de/market/item.php?id=5320390
or this
http://egun.de/market/item.php?id=5321875

and do what gunmaker here doing: material when needed is apply be welding and then its fit into the existing bases. they dont care for an allready fit feet because it never happen and change what they need by welding and file.

Lancaster, I agree with your thinking on this.

This has to have something in it to start with^

I joined Egun but it will not allow me to sign in, and for some reason the translator does seem to work well or at all sometimes. Am I missing something or should I learn to speak german? Speaking german seems like the easiest route so far.

Ebay normally has a bunch of rings for these. BUT each set is fitted to the bases. They probably won't fit your bases.

If you want to take a lot of time you can fit these rings to your bases.

If you're in Anch. I'll let you look over one of mine.

I suggested egun.de on the other thread where this was raised. I'd be a little wary of one thing though, and that is that some of those German ring sets are pretty specific to a particular scope and where it will sit - especially those designed to go around the objective bell. Of course, if you have a scope with a large objective bell you also need to consider whether you'll be able to tip the scope forward enough to detach it, which is often the reason it seems for having the front ring there. Scopes with a rail underneath give you a bit more leeway fore and aft, and might avoid such issues.

FWIW when I wanted to change scopes on my drilling I bought a scope with rail and the feet to suit, via egun.de, and had the feet modified to fit. This work was done by a German-trained gunsmith, but wasn't outrageously expensive. Doing it yourself would be a case of getting out some bearing blue and fine files, and perhaps doing a bit of building up with welding, as was mentioned above, but I preferred to have someone better trained than me to do it. It has worked very well, and now I have two scopes fitted for the gun, one and a spare.

I'll take some photos later if you like.

Mike,
I might give you a holler next time Im down, the bases from NECG seems like the route Im going to go, If I could just get them to answer an e-mail......I too see rings and bases on there but the prices are ridiculous compared to what europeans are paying. To pay 250.00 for a set of rings that I may or may not get to fit would be silly.

Dan,
I saw the suggestion but spooked away from egun because of the translation and shipping issues. I finally got signed in but google translator and that site do not mesh for me. I'll keep plugging away. I've seen a lot of pictures and have an idea what the shape of the hooks need to be but I could really use some rough measurements on the hook dimensions as a starting point. My thought is to start fat and take a little off at a time until I reach a good fit.

What a pain this is turning out to be, Im starting to think that getting a different action to build might be be a better option.

I never had any luck with emailing them. But they do answer the phone quickly.

these might work and be cheaper in the long run depending upon which scope you wish to use.

but you need a steel tube with the dimensions of this halfrings, have to dismantle the scope, solder the tube, blueing and assemble the scope
better to take feets for a scope with rail

Probably the easiest way to go, is to order a pair of Ruger factory rings, extra high.

Saw the clamping arrangement off the bottom, and you'll have plenty of material with which to work.

And in plan view (sorry about the focus):

And the rear:

And viewed from toward the front

And a sketch, approx to scale, showing dimensions in mm:

Hi, Alaskanrocket,

Don't modify the fine Suhl mount bases that are fitted to your rifle.
Claw mounting a scope isn't too difficult if you take care to go slowly and gently fit the parts perfectly.
All parts are readily available from RECKNAGEL or EAW (Ernst Apel Werke)
Hope the photos below will help.

Those are perfect. Thanks for all the help. I'll keep you posted. A friend has shown interest in the rifle and I might pass it on to him as well as this info. Thanks again, Jess
