Unmarked Mauser 98 Fullwood Sporter...any thoughts?
      #257380 - 01/12/14 02:04 AM

I have been offered this Mauser 8X57JS fullstock sporter by a reliable individual. The problem I have with it is that it is apparently completely unmarked...no maker's name, no proofs, no serial number, no nothing...I have requested close up photos of checkering, sights, butt, etc...I am hesitant to buy unmarked rifles, but it looks nice, the metal is in 90% "very good" condition, the wood even better, and supposedly it has a near perfect bore and the glass (TEII Wetzler 4X)is very good as well. The seller is calling it a "guild rifle'...which means ...to me...nothing.......Any thoughts?

It looks like a Brno to me...see the last 2 photos of my minty 1945 Brno 8x57JS

Someone has build quite nice fullstocked Mauser. As you see, the bolt handle differs from BRNO model and there is too a "middle scnabel" in forestock which is typical for older german made full stocked Mausers. Other typical characteristic detail for those older german custom mausers is opening lever on magazine bottom plate which you can see i´n this rifle too.

I think the bolt handle is pretty close to the BRNO type. also...Seller told me its the nicest dst that he has ever used.

Both nice rifles, yours and the other. I don't think it is a Brno, too many little things
that say no. I have several unmarked Mausers. This to me, depending on the price, means almost nothing if I like what I see. As far as no #s has he looked under the wood sometimes
a lot of info is there. --- John303

I do like what I see and I will get some more detailed photos of certain parts when the seller gets back from patrol. What do you think its roughly worth?

I still think its early Brno or at least Czech..right down to the same checkering pattern as on my 1945. I'll know better when I see the close ups I've requested. I've owned a lot of Brno's.

Assembled by a Czech in the style of a Brno - maybe. You may / may not know but Early commercial
Oberndorfs had no markings except for a serial # behind the recoil lug and on the back of the mag. box.
The ones with DSTs had them installed into the bottom metal v. a separate unit, that's why the underwood ?
As far as a price, strictly ball park $1000.00 +/- 200.00, if however it turns out to be an Oberndorf, it could be quite a bit more. Lets see when more photos arrive. --- John

This one looks very similar, except trigger guard, as in yours fotos; it´s for sale just now in Germany...

http://www.egun.de/market/item.php?id=5188177

Shotgun -styled trigger guard is quite ordinary in older german-made custom mausers with double set triggers.

The photos are not quite detailed or close enough for me but I will say this. I have now seen two Czech Mausers that I am sure were "Brno" sporters without any of the normal Brno marks. The one in my possession has one tiny "circled z" on the bottom of the receiver. The other I wasn't able examine that closely but it was Czech proofed, as is mine. Both rifles have/had many parts (besides the usual mauser interchangeability) that are distinctly "Brno"

All this says to me is that the Arsenal that made the "Brno" trademarked rifles also made others from time to time. Maybe individual workmen took projects home, who would know.

I just noticed that yours action looks very similar like jugoslavian VZ 500, commercial version of military m48.

I'm not convinced. The seller has sent me a new set of pictures and the quality of the rifle seems to get lower and lower the more I look at them. The checkering is crude and the metal work on sights, sling swivels, forend cap, etc. seems very basic...it looks more and more like an "apprentice" piece, maybe too much like one. Here are a few of the new photos. Let me know what you think.

I decided not to buy it. It looked worse in every photo he sent me. The seller insisted on $1000. and I think that's too much. That's Canadian money which to someone in the States these days is only $864., but I'm paid in Canadian dollars and its still a thousand to me. I've bought German made no-name sporters before and I was never very happy with them and ended up selling them at a loss. So I'll forget about it and move on.

Is it possible it is a 'craft gun' made at a gunsmith school?

It looks like a rifle Ellwood Epps sold about 6 years ago. It sold for $500.00

I'm completely unsure of this rifle as well..
Which would be a better deal, a very nice Lee speed or this Mauser? Its a very hard decision..
