Browning Safari Question
      #134366 - 04/05/09 05:19 AM

I'm fairly new to the board and not a real Mauser collector but I have a Browning Safari rifle in .458 that has a serial number 1802. Most of the Browning Safari's I see have a letter prefix. Can anyone tell me about mine? year built? I looks like it was without sights and someone added them, would a .458 be scoped only? Thank You.

Brad

Can't tell you about the production date. I have looked at a couple of safari .458s and I believe they were equipped with open sights, I would think on something like that a scope would be an option. --- John 303.

Hi John,

I'm surprised at how little info is out there on these, It looks like the front sight is held on by epoxy (not a bad job just not factory) and I bought a factory rear sight but the holes don't match up, it has a Williams rear on it. It's nice gun in good condition that was fairly cheap and appears to be of good quality.

Brad: I've owned two Safaris ( .300 Win Mag & a .264), still have a custom 6mm Rem. on a small ring FN Supreme action. The Safaris are rather plain Jane but well made (at least metal wise) IMHO. A little enhancement work on the stock can make them more appealing. While your at it why don't you get sights typical to the calibre put on, you know - express rear. banded & ramped front and a banded sling swivel. Certainly would make the whole sight thing more appropriate. JMHO --- John 303.
