BRNO Mauser - New Rifles - your opinion please...
      #56239 - 03/05/06 04:13 AM

BRNO (ZBROJOVKA BRNO)... in the Czech Republic is producing complete rifles.

I'm still waiting to get some specific questions answered, but here is what I understand.

They are taking vz24s (from receivers that never sold)...
>Surface grinding them,
>Drilling & tapping them,
>Adding the barrel-mounted swivel,
>Adding low safety.

>Avail Calibers: (with or without sights)
7x57
7x64
6,5x55SE
.243Win
.270Win
.308Win
30-06Sprg.
8x57JS
9,3x62
.300Win Mag.
7mm Rem.Mag.

And stocking them with a decent piece of walnut.

Given the historic quality of the v24 (vs the pending Remington 798), I think these would be desirable guns.

For the work done above (and the scarcity of good vz24s) what would you think these complete rifles would sell for?

Your opinions/input are appreciated.

Send me a 9.3x62 and 7X57 for testing and I will let you know!

I would think Remington's pricing on the Zasatava-actioned rifles would be a starting point, depending on fit and finish. The VZ-24s might be better than the Zastava actions and the fit/finish could end up better, commanding a premium.

Going to add a new line to the Heym?

Thanks, Charles. No, they wouldn't have anything to do with HEYM, but potentially a new product to import.

Just at a glance, the stockwork itself appears to be above and beyond anything "Big Green" has produced in the past 20-years.

How about a number...???

I meant a new addition to your Heym line -- let me know when you get the samples in!

I might pay more because they do not say Remington, but I am no expert on pricing. They look pretty good but the stock design and no recoil pad may have a negative marketing effect here.

Thanks, Charles.

Those are two points I've identified as well.
1-straight comb stock
2-add decent recoil pad.

If they can add a Model 70-type safety then so much the better, at least for me. Some may disagree.

I think that rifle would sell quite well in Australia. Better than a lot of the crap being sold currently.

I would buy a 9.3x62 - what price do you expect them to sell at? And, are you also going to offer their custom Damascus barreled guns? I doubt I could afford them but I would like to know what the price would be.

Also, my friend MacNaughton recently bought their double 803 and loves it. He said that he had never seen a better double rifle at that price.

Thanks for this and best wishes,

Well, the checkering could be a bit cleaner but other then that I would carry that rifle in my shop if they shoot well! To me it looks like a well layed out rifle and fit and finish is beyond most factory rifles from the major factories here. I would really like to see one of these rifles as not all my customers can foot the bill for our custom guns we always try to have some recomendations for "factory" guns that we feel comfortably recomending. We are finding fewer and fewer as the years go by this may be somthing to look into. Where would we get info and priceing?

With "American" stock, recoil pad, Mod 70 safety....probably 10-20% more than Remington ($600) so in the $700-750 range. IMO.

I like them just as is, and would buy two...300 Win & 9,3X62...maybe a 6.5X55. A classic American butt stock with a nice cheekpiece would be a good idea........Still, they are classic European, and look great just the way they are.

If it's of interest, Sabi Rifles use the Vz24 action on their rifles. They'll make whatever calibre you want and stock it however you want and to your measurements....... If you're a dealer, I'm sure they'd be happy talk prices........ I can highly recommend their work.

Let me know if you nees contact details.......

Mehul,

I know he used to be and I always enjoyed seeing the pics of the Sabi Rifles he used to post ..... but I haven't seen any for a while....... I hope he still is the US Sabi agent and I hope he gets back to posting the pics again....... They're great rifles and well deserving of a wider audience..... and I can't wait to get my hands on the 404 Jeffery I've just bought from them....... just waiting for the paperwork to be processed by the cops.....

new_guy,

No idea what they would sell for but like Charles I think one in 7 x 57 and one in 9.3 x 62 would be fantastic.

Regarding the stocks, I like the idea of the hogback stock as is although I think it could use a good recoil pad instead of that platic buttplate.

One option I would like to see would be a set of shallow V express sights.

Richard

Steve,

From what I know of Nick he probably does not advertise much at all. I missed a very nice 375 H&H that one of his clients was selling at a fantastic price. They are lovely rifles, no doubt. It is a sad thing that many of the fine South African gunmakers like Steve Fourie, Craig Klintworth etc are not well known here. It would be really nice if their products sold more in this aprt of the world.

Cheers!

Perhaps he'll let us know.

They're just finishing a .458 Lott for a client/friend of mine and it's simply to die for......... Esp now that I convinced him to change the rearsight to a quarter rib as well.........

Thanks for all of your input guys.

It appears that after getting past one layer in this onion... there's another... and another, etc...

The problem is that, as these are based on the Mauser '98, these include parts from "military weapons."

On the other hand, they clearly have been remanufactured and sporterized to make "sporting rifles."

For importation into the US, the question becomes which of the two does the ATF consider it... "military weapon" or "sporting rifle?" It's a little grey at this point (based on their definitions) but shouldn't take too long to get sorted out one way or the other.

Finally, they are not as inexpensive as one might think. Compared to a new OTC Remchester, etc... I believe you're getting better quality in the BRNO, but they are still realatively unknown as a common brand in the US.

Shipping, duties, taxes, insurance, etc... they would have to retail in the $850 - $900 range.

How does that sit with you?

PS - as for the suggested improvements; a 3-position safety is out of the question... but a straight comb stock could be had for about $50 more.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think that is about $200 over what the market will bear.. As you mentioned and most of us will agree, it is a quality rifle better than the new Remchester ect, ect... But.. John Q. public will still see it as just another re-hashed surplus rifle.. In the past surplus conversions have alway's had to sell lower than the big 3 in order to move at all.. Now, in countries where choice is limited, the marketing strategy might prove different.. I know in the U.S that stock is loathed by most, then tell the shmuck he has to pay $50 more for a straight stock!... CZ is enjoying right now success they only most likely dreamed of mainly because they filled a nich for a reasonable quality big bore at a reasonble price that others did not supply, unless they charged a bunch more money for it then that put them into the speciality market which in turn pushed the casual buyer off the radar.. Now if they went to the classic Mauser stock and look, called it the traditional or some marketing name, I think they could get away with charging those numbers. Then John Q. feels he's getting something special for the extra outlay.. Just my opinion ..
