What is this rifle. Was it a good buy even if rebarreled. Military, commercial or otherwise?

This is a commercial Mauser, Oberndorf, Type S Stutzen (=carbine), factory order code SRJ, made in 1940. It was rebarreled by Johnson to .257 Roberts post-war. Fortunately Johnson reinstalled the original open sights and barrel band. The claw mount bases are not by the Mauser factory, but made and installed by the retailing gunsmith. As usual, the scope was missed when the rifle was “liberated” after WW2. It will be difficult to have a new scope mounted on these bases. Though not a real collector’s item any more because of the rebarrel job, it is a very nice and rare hunting rifle.
