Custom Mauser projects-Ideas needed
      #49996 - 15/02/06 08:23 AM

Gentlemen,

I have four mauser’s (ZG-47) that I want to use for future custom projects, my problem is that I’m not sure what calibers to choose, any suggestions of suitable classic calibers for these?

What features/options would you consider for a custom rifle?

Don’t be shy

Cheers,
Johan

Johan,
Well you sure have the right action/s to build some nice rifles.
I just love those ZG's!

Calibers, I'd say there would have to be a 9.3 x 62 and a 404 if it were my choice.
Not sure you really need any more than that so you can sell the other two actions to me!

Hello Johan,

What a nice problem to have!

1) 240 Weatherby
2) 7x57
3) 35 Whelen, 9.3x62, 9.3x64
4) 416 Taylor

Johan,

I agree with 4seventy - a 9.3x62 and a 404 are superb suggestions. Since you are going the correct way of chambering the rifles for classical rounds, the 318 W-R, 30-06, 8x57 JS, 8x64, maybe a lightweight rifle in 6.5x57 or 7x57... there are several possibilities. Now donlt start complaining that these suggestions make you want to buy more actions and build more rifles.

We are not to blame for making you spend money, because you asked the question first.

Cheers and do post pictures of the guns as they are being made.

I like classic cartridges. Just some ideas:

.257 Roberts or 6.5x55 or 6.5x57 or 7x57
.30-06 or 8x57JS
.35 Whelen or 9.3x62
10.75x68 or 10.75x73 (.404 Jeffery)

(Will the .404 fit in a ZG-47?)

Gentlemen,
It's a very pleasant but difficult problem. Now I'm considering 7X64/270, 8X68S, 9,3X64/9,3X62 and ?

Bob F- The magazine on ZG-47 action is approximately 88,5-89mm, or about 3,5 inches. A skilled smith can make it handle 404 Jeffery but it requires a range of modifications etc. Trouble with 404 is the floorplate & magazine box What features would you opt for?

4seventy- sorry, my ZG's are not for sale

Mehul- I won't whinge.... After long and hard thinking I’ve reached the conclusion that from an utilitarian point of view a few dozen should be sufficient, at least for the moment

Cheers,
Johan

JOHAN,

As far as features, I'm really not informed enough to make any specific recommendations. I will say, though, that I generally like the lines of the classic, old Type A and Type B Mauser sporters. Something along these lines:

I've got a couple of books about Mauser sporters (the Jon Speed book for one) but I'm far from any type of expert on them.

What you have to hunt should come into it !
At the bottom end I would choose .240 Weatherby , .25/06 or .257 Weatherby .
Middle of the road .270 , 7 x 57 , .280 , 7 x64 , .30/06 .
Above that suit yourself .

Bushie,

The idea is to get a set of rifles suitable for most hunting, I have excluded African adventures for dangerous game with big bores etc.

Cheers

For any North American big game including the bears, elk and moose, you could not go wrong with the 9.3x62.
: In the same flavour, is the .375 Hawk-Scovil and .375/06 IMP are located, with better bullet choice in North America. My .375/06 IMP has the longer body giving the case the same capacity as the Hawk-Scovil (or perhaps a gr. more)
: My hunting loads run from 235gr. Speers at 2,845fps for plains game, to 300gr. bonded Hornady's at 2,470fps for bear and moose.
; If you google .375 Scovil, you'll see some excellent data on what the old '06 case is capable of. Some of the laods are a bit hot, while others are sub-max in my rifle.
: My next Mauser project will be a .400 Brown Whelen - maybe a switch-barrel.

Well, if you are a bit demented like me you could go with the 500 Jeffery. It fits into a Mauser action and will work on any thing any where in the world!!!! With a .404 and a 9.3X62 as back ups what else could you ask for other then a doctor to treat your shoulder, it is really not that bad, but the 500 is something to think about.

Must admit that 500 Jeffery has always been on my wanted list also.
Good choice.
From what I've seen and heard the major problem associated with 500 Jeff on 98 type actions is getting the feed right.
Can be achieved of course but usually takes a lot more work than most other smaller chamberings on 98's.

Mausers are great and there is a certain beauty and grace with Mausers shooting metric calibers.

My preference would be one of the rifles in a African BIG Bore with open sights, excellent feeding and a classical stock design with great wood that won't fracture your cheekbone or shoulder!! Stock design and fit is everything in the big boomers.

Such a unique custom gun is a true treasure and enjoyment beyond words.

Never ! Never ! Never !

If anyone wishes to go Weatherby it should be stainless and Tupperware, much like the misbegotten place that fathered it !

ALF,
I agree, it would be blasphemy and sorcery to make a ZG-47 in a wby round. Actually, I have a 7mm wby with stainless barrel synthetic stock and it's built on 702 push feed action It's my "rainy day rifle"

Now I'm considering ZG-47's in 8X68S, 9,3X64 and possibly 404 Jeffery. Brno m-21 in 7X64

Cheers
/Johan

Personally I would have one made in a .375 H&H Magnum and there is NO reason to exclude it from African hunting! It should be able to be fitted in the action OK with some modifications.

A 9.3x64 would be similar and a great substitute.

8x68S, yes.

Another idea would be to stock one as a light weight Mannicher-Schoenauer full stock styled rifle, maybe in a classic medium cartridge such as 7x57, 6.5x57, even a 8x57mm.

Hi Johan!

If you were to make up a classic german style rifle
a 8x64 Brenneke would be classy.

A .318 Westley Richards would natually do for the classic British sportingrifle.

If all thing goes wrong I have a spare barrel metfordrifled
for a .333 jeffery......but it will cost you$$$$$$(hahaha)

John,
thanks for the ideas. I bought a Brno m-21 in 8X57IS a few days ago... a very short and handly rifle, I need to find a brno 22 stock or extend the current one

Rigbymauser-I already have a ZG-47 in 8X64S Things does not go wrong

Cheers

Johan,
the cartridges that would suit your style best are undoubdedly the 30-06, 257 Bob, 35 Whelen or the 280 AI. And preferably with a stainless barrel.

Regards,

Georg

My Mausers are:
8X57 for fun
30-06
9.3X62
.458 Win Mag

Makes for a very nice and broad range rifle battery.

I'm in the middle of building a 3 rifle set with a veddy british flavor. 275 H&H, 300 H&H, and 375 H&H. For a fourth, how about 240 H&H. Try and find 4 close to matching nice sticks of wood and stock them with a n eye to copying the Mauser A style of yesteryear. Cheers.
