Two Mauser Sporter Rifles by DORLEAC
      #340305 - 20/04/20 06:43 PM

I take advantage of the lockdown that keeps us away from the bench to publish some photos of two rifles fully completed in the white before going in the engraver hands.

The first is a 6.5x55 SE "Stalking Rifle" built on a commercial Original Mauser square bridge action produced circa 1930.
Of course, the system has been fully blue printed and deeply modified, but it retains the mechanical elegance of pre-war Oberndorf productions.
The 25" match grade Lothar-Walther barrel has been meticulously profiled and chambered for the superb 6,5 Swede cartridge.
Our customer opted for a Swarovski Z8i 1,7-13,3x42 scope that we fitted on a claw mount while retaining the locking integrated into the rear flat top.

The other one is a .270W treated "Big Game" style, built on a beautiful pre-war commercial Oberndorf 98' Mauser action.
The 25" barrel is profiled from a Lothar-Walther match grade blank and the general rifle look captures the details that are typical of our styling.
The scope, an old new in box Swarovski AV 3-10x42 is mounted on our favorite claw mount while the express sight has bee perfectly regulated on the combined bead and moon front sight.

Regards to all.

STUNNING!
Joel - what will you use for the centre lines in the express sights?
Will they be gold or silver or something else?

Certainly an exceptional level of craftsmanship displayed on those two rifles, almost beyond reproach. I've never been taken much with including cartridge details and magazine capacity on the floorplate although it's nowhere near as grating as the American penchant for engraving the barrel of their firearms with dire warnings and the need to read the owners manual before use which really does smack of 'firearms for dummies'.

You just can't beat the Mauser for providing that magical reliable workhorse look despite all the bells and whistles.

Can´t decide what pleases me better.
Tend to the 6,5 x55 . Those single square bridge actions are aesthetcally the most desirable to my taste.

Impeccable executed as always.

The express sights leaves will be gold lined while the standing will bear a gold triangle.

Joel, magnificent work once again, two similar but different sporters in great cartridges. Very classy and the proportions are perfect. I particularly like the way you finished the bolt release lever.

As always Joel impeccable workmanship creating works of shooting art.

I assume the peep bolt shroud sight can be rotated down when using the express sights? Does it get in the way of the right hand when rotated down?

Thank you very much for showing us these two rifles on the forums yet again. A treat for all of us for over eight years now.

No trouble with the Lyman n°1 bolt peep sight when folded with our elongated grip style. I have shot numerous rounds at the bench with that rifle and never encountered an hand bite.

Joel,

Thanks for the reply. I made the shocking realisation the
other day, I am not sure if I have ever used or shot a
rifle using a peep sight?! I have a mental picture of
looking through peep sights, so must have done that with a
rifle some time in the distant past, but have no memory of
pulling a trigger with one. Must rectify this one day soon.

It might be a bit redundant, but I see having a rifle with
three different sighting systems as quite cool, scope,
peep and V sight. Or a choice of scope, Red dot and V
express sights, especially on a double rifle.

Your rifles are such modern classics. IMO without all the
un-neccessary embellishments of excessive engraving,
carving whatever sometimes clients want, making them such
clean designs. And IMO some of the best in the world. I
must shut up, before driving the price up and up, before I
order at least one of them one day!

As a French gunmaker, what is the epitome of "French:
calibres for a sporting rifle? Was there any particular
cartridges invented for world wide hunting for French
hunters and shooters? The French had huge African
territories after all and some great hunting territories.
Maybe not, but not excluding them, the French military
cartridges, I suppose they suffered from the civilian ban.
