I've had this one for some time and it's really a shame the condition this rifle ended up in.It is a 375 nitro on a 98 action. It is missing the forend latch, the floorplate and follower and the plate between the stock and forend. The bore is real nice and has a unique rear sight.I believe the bottom metal may be siamese to accept the short rimmed 375.

WVFred,

That is a beautiful rifle despite the abuse. With some TLC she could be a beautiful girl again!

Best wishes oon a project that we'll all look forward to over here.

Good hunting!

Sinner,
I really haven't decided what to do with it,I think restoring it will be very costly but it would be a shame not to.One day I may sell it to someone willing to spend the money for a proper restoration.
Thanks

Fred

......What has become of this ??? As I have retired from the commercial aspect of Gun Building, I am looking for a project for the remaining years. While I would imagine it is out of reach of my checkbook, I suppose it never hurts to inquirer..

.............if only it was a .360.............

This is the only Fraser I have seen built on a 98 action. I find his bolt handle attachment to be quite interesting; it appears to be a pinned tongue and groove joint. That method is probably unique to Fraser, is it not?

2nd first, Yes the bolt handle is "attached" by a pinned tongue, well actually a pinned round stud. Unique for sure, have wondered why not welded.

1st statement. Of the "original" Fraser's...i.e..... Daniel J. standing at the center bench, I have not seen another 98. That said later/modern built D.J. Fraser rifles by H&H, Dickinson, MacNaughton regularly used M98 actions....as well as Sako's BSA CF2, San Marcos.........

I build mine in very similar fashion, though I also TIG them and file them so as not so show the joint line. I've attached a "before and after" photo below. My raw castings show the discussed projection. The above photo shows perhaps the most obvious example I've seen of it. In most of the Fraser magazine rifles I've personally handled the joint wasn't quite so apparent, but there none-the-less.

This too is the first Fraser I've seen using a 98. However, that is as Caprivi states...."with Daniel at the bench". You run across later model "Fraser's" on 98s, after they were acquired by Dickson and MacNaughton.

In Jon Speed's third book The Mauser Archive, pages 521-522 there are photos of a virtually identical, cased, Frazier "Velox" rifle in 303 that has Mauser SN 174 (1898)

Imho Fraser bought in some (know of 2 others)original Mauser "short intermediate" actions through Rigby. Rigby used these rare actions with slant magazines for .303 Mauser M98 rifles. AFAIK only about 50 such actions were ever supplied to Rigby by the Mauser, Oberndorf factory 1898 to 1908.
