M-S with cheek piece and double safety.
      #221448 - 13/12/12 02:55 AM

Hallo! First, sorry for possible mistakes in my English. I've come across that interesting forum searching Internet for some information about my Mannlicher Schoenauer 6.5x54. As You can see it from the photos, the carbine has a folding cheek piece, both wing and tang safety. Having just a bit of knowledge about those rifles, I realized that is something unusual. The number on metal parts (barrel, magazine, bolt handle) is 7854, the other number, under the stock is 21084. I wonder what is the date of production and is it modified later (because of that tang safety and cheek piece)? I would appreciate anything You might tell me about 03 of mine or at least I'd like to introduce another hunting M-S to You.

Rav welcome. You have a very nice rifle. I wish mine had the cheekpiece. It would make using the scope so much easier. Sorry don't know about the safety. Enjoy it.

nice schoenauer

made by Steyr or not but made before WW 2 I would say. the "safe" engraving is a mystery, please show also the whole scope mount and a complete pic's of the rifle. it seem to be not the usual german/austrian scope mount of those days.

More pics (thank You, lancaster for posting previous ones, I don't know how to), the scope is Hensoldt Wetzlar Dialytan 4x (Nr 43199). Teddy bear is not of Mannlicher production ;-).

post war scope but I have not seen this rear base before, the additional safety is no doubt a silence stalking safety

How do You know that is the post war scope, because of the number? I don't want to controvert Your opinion, just trying to learn something from "Higher Calibers".

with 43199 I would put it into post war production but no way a scope collector or specialist. just my feeling! there where also different versions of the Wetzlar Dialytan 4x iirc and I dont know if they are in one number range.
what do you know about the history of your rifle?

Don’t know much. The carbine has been in my family since the end of WWII. I inherited it from my father. He, in turn, was given it from his father’s brother, who was a medical officer in Polish Armed Forces in the West and as I was told, he brought the rifle to Poland, coming back from England (via occupied Germany?) soon after the war was over.
By the way, what is the gender of words “rifle”, “carbine” in English, he, she, it?

It looks very similar to my 6.5, serial number 25xxx, made in 1938.

In English we do not usually have genders for nouns, except for ships which are always 'she'. I expect a nice rifle could also be a 'she', but if behaving badly could well be an 'it'!

so the history of the rifle give us any possibility!

I believe the safety is made in england simlpy because of the word"safe". looks english to me.
the scope mount seems to be a mannlicher schoenauer claw mount in the first view but the lever on the rear base is very unusual. such levers are typical for different british scope mounts maybe this was their taste. one the other hand the soldered half rings on the scope and the claw mount feets are german as possible.

to find out if the scope is post or pre world war 2 we need a specialist. sometimes the difference between is very small. have a britisch made mannlicher in 375 NE with a Ajack 4x90 that was sold as an old WW 2 military sniper scope.

anyway I did not by the rifle for the scope and a little research was showing the truth. post and pre war scopes of this model are completly the same only the inscription "Ajack 4x90" on the scope is different. please compare with this pre war made scope here

That is neat, and you don't see many with that cheek piece that are done well like yours.

I have one on 1903 MS kinda like yours, the switch is on the bottom and marked with GM if I recall-will dig it out and check. Its lined in horn to let it move up and down smoothly and quietly.

You can see the switch in this one;
