Hi All

I thought I'd share a few photos of a recent hunt using my new 1903 Mannlicher. She arrived from the UK a couple of months ago and it was love at first site. She is almost virginal in condition - everything is nice and tight with matching numbers. She has a few features not often seen on a 1903 (side safety catch and the steyr mounts usually seen on later models). The scope is surprisingly clear for such an ancient old thing and so far seems to be returning to zero and putting the 160 grainers exactly where I want them.







The load I have settled on is 38 gns of AR2209 in Norma cases behind the Hornady .264" 160 gn RNSP. On her first outing she cleaned up half a dozen good boars and 7 brumby's from ranges out to 100m or so.

How good is it to be able to use the original scope also!

Thanks for the compliments. I still can't believe my good luck at actually getting hold of such an excellent specimen. There are a lot of real clunkers getting about in OZ - I think all the really good examples are tucked away in big collections and you have to be in the know to get a crack at them. Thats why I looked in the UK.

No Adam I haven't used the open sights yet - my eyesight in the last 12 months or so has failed me terribly and open sights are just a blur. I've pretty much had to adjust the focus of all my scopes for wearing glasses - its a real pain!

Collath, the only marks on the scope are on the brass focussing plate and they are - ZUM SCHARFSTELLEN and D.R.G.M. Anything you can tell me about it would be much appreciated. As mentioned before it is quite clear and easily focussed. I think it is probably about a 2x magnification.

Prior to buying this rifle I bought a set of ERA claw mounts to mount a modern Kahles 2-7x on it but while this old setup still works I'm going to leave it alone - it will probably prove to be not so good if I ever move to a cooler climate because it's not N2 sealed. As 4seventy mentioned above, its pretty cool to be able to use her effectively as is.

Has anyone ever seen a safety like this? I'm assuming it was done in the UK at some point. Also notice the placement further down the barrel of the foresight - another pommy feature!

I wore glasses for around three years and worked out that this was not for me.
I was lucky that my sight was able to be improved by Laser surgery.

Hi GG375,
your rifle isn't a 1903 type its a 1950 model with side safty.On the left side of the receiver you should read some stampings like NPV 50 or NPF 50 or 51.

sorry I forgott to answer your question concerning the scope.
D.R.G.M. means "Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster" and it looks like an old Kahles Mignon 2X Sniper Scope.Have a look under the scope for some markings.But it could be also an old Dr.W.Gerard Scope from Germany Charlottenburg.

I'm taking her out on a date again this weekend so will have a good look under the scope to see if there are any other markings.

I really don't think it is a later model rifle because it has "Model 1903" engraved on the receiver ring and the older style magazine with no support at the cartridge shoulder like the 1950 and later models.

Hopefully will post more pictures of some tusky boars after the weekend.

She's a beaut, GG--Does your rifle have the pre-war trapdoor buttplate? Maybe it was built pre-war as a conventional 1903, then upgraded later at either Steyr or in Britain with proper, post-war factory parts. Or maybe it was assembled post-war out of remaining early supplies?

Have you checked the proof code on the underside of the action? That should at least clear up when it passed through the Austrian proof house (the last two digits following the period [.] indicate year of proof, i.e. 1234.20 would denote 1920).

Regardless of when it was built or in what original configuration, it's a great blend of features that looks absolutely correct, and in gorgeous shape to boot. Have fun with her!

Hi Malco

Yes it does have the trap door buttplate and I think you may be correct about having been either modified with later parts (mounts and safety) or assembled later on with early parts.

I'll have another look but I don't think there are any proof codes under the receiver to date it and I'm not keen on removing the front base from the barrel to see what I can find underneath.

She's certainly proved her worth this year tho with quite a few kills to her credit. As soon as time allows, I'll post some more photos and a list.

To me the scope looks like a R.Fuess, Berlin No.3, see the 1908 AKAH catalog p.64. It was certainly retailed originally by the well-known gunmaker Collath, Frankfurt on Oder."Zum Scharfstellen" means "for focusing".

Here it is. As you see, the Fuess' "Helios #3" was available in three length to suit different mountings. Post-and-crosshair reticle standard, dot or crosshair no extra cost, German type 3-post Mark 8.50 extra. The advertisement praised brightness, field and flatness of view.

Thanks heaps for that. The drawing certainly looks very similar to the scope on my rifle. I'm damned if I can find any other markings on it except those I've mentioned above - perhaps there are some under the rings but I don't want to go there!!

How do you find the muzzle blast from the 20" barreled 9.5? Is it a problem, or is it not so bad with the low pressure and low velocity? I owned a 20" barreled .270 Win for quite a few years and I reckon it is the reason for my loss of hearing in my left ear.

The reason I ask is that I know where there is a lovely 1910 take down with a 20" barrel but I have always shied away from buying it because of my fear of doing yet more damage to my hearing.

As your scope is marked by the retailer Collath, it was likely not marked by the actual maker Fuess, as Collath probably was not interested to let his customers know where he got his fine scopes. This was common practice with the European guntrade then.
Well, recoil and muzzle blast are felt different by different men. For instance, many complain about the recoil of a 30-06, which appears nearly recoilless to me. The "boom" of the 20" 9.5 to me is far less annoying than the high-pitched "crack" of a 26" barrel .300 Magnum or 6.5x68.

The side safety came about around 1952 and the scope mounts might also be post-war. My Model 1903 6,5x54 MS was made in 1928, for instance, but the mounts, which look to be the same as yours, were post-war (c. 1960's) type and fitted much later by the gunsmith who later sold it to me. The manufacture date of your rifle will be perhaps hidden by the stock. If you find a number sequence like 969.51 it'll mean the 969th proof of the year 1951. The scope may predate the rifle, but it looks pretty there and if it works, why change it ?, (I wouldn't) Optical coatings only came about in the 1940's, so the glass will be clear, not coated.
