Mannlicher 1908 and 1952 reviews
      #285671 - 26/07/16 02:34 PM

I've done two video reviews of my 1952 and 1908 rifles.
A bit rough around the edges but I did enjoy making them.

Really well done, you went to a lot of effort, thanks for posting. The scope rings in the second video are some of the best scope rings ever made. They look a little different to most others but that is what makes them interesting, and they really do return to zero each time. I have made several sets of those rings for customers and while they are time consuming to make, they are a lot of fun.

Would there be a market for an accurate reproduction of that mount ??

There may be a market however I should point out that they are quite time consuming to make which means expensive. All the rings that we made for customers went onto rifles which had a special meaning to the owner and therefore they were happy to spend the money. I use a pantograph and patterns to shape the rings but if one was to make several sets at once then the price could
probably be reduced by wire cutting. They are also time consuming to fit and need to be fitted correctly for them to return to zero and not stress the scope. They are however very strong, return to zero and probably the most interesting ring/mount sets you will find on any rifle. They fit well with the whole Mannlicher Schoenauer theme of having things technically different and interesting
( eg. rotary magazine, cartridge release button, different extractor etc. ) They also look good.

Igor, the rings appear to be the later central pin type rather than the earlier offset pin type which is what our customers had. They also only have a limited size range. Our customers would bring us their scope of choice and we made rings specifically to suit their scope, quit often period scopes, and importantly the rings are made to suit the position of their bases so that their is no stress on the scope. We also made our rings with a vertical split which helps with bolt cycling as it gives the greatest finger clearance.

By the way, thanks for posting that website, looks like they make a good product. I notice the actions have a full recoil lug rather than the small factory lug.

Igor, not at all. They are an exact copy of the original rings except for the size and the vertical split. (Although the first set of rings supplied to me to copy also had a vertical split, however they may have been an aftermarket item offered at the time) Stupidly I never took any photos at the time, however I just purchased a Model 1908 which I intend to bring back to life and a set of those rings and bases will be made and fitted. I will take photos this time and post them.

It'd be a great CNC project if a fella had a set to copy.

You are quite right, CNC would be ideal however there is still a lot of hand fitting involved.

You'd lap in the front pivot to reduce stress on the scope during mounting/dismounting.

The barrel band on front ring would have to be bored to suit barrel diameter.

Your ring centre heights would have to be correct (to reduce bending stresses on scope). Boring them while both held in a jig (or on an action) would achieve this.

As long as your rings were split you could position them to suit bases/scope.

After that there's a windage screw/screws in the rear ring that goes into the rear base.

I think they're the best of the Mannlicher mounts that I've seen. Some of the rest look like crude scaffolding done as an after thought.

Rings to suit existing bases would also have to be an attractive offering. Though you'd need the rifle to fit them.

Trouble is, if I could build these mounts, then I'd "have to" have a Mannlicher.

Dear All
Below are some additional photos about the earlier-type and now apparently uncommon MS scope mounts (without central pin) filmed by Wurger in the excellent video about his MS 1952. My MS 1903 is equipped with similar scope mounts and I must reckon they are great to use.
Best regards.

Very nice Louis, that's exactly the type of rings and bases that I am talking about. I think they are great and they certainly suit your rifle.

Thanks for the photos Louis.

They are certainly the nicest of the Mannlicher mounts that I've seen.

Does anyone have similar pictures of the "central pin" style mount that they could post ???

Photos and factory leaflet for "central pin" factory mount can be consulted at Joel Dorleac's website http://www.dorleac-dorleac.com/arme/mannlicher-schonauer-no-30gvt/?lang=en

Thank you Louis.

They're both, by far, the best looking mounts on a Mannlicher that I've seen.

But that's just my opinion.

Did all these quick detachable mounts have split rings?

It is from 1954. These catalogs (Shooter's Bible) are a great source of information about these rifles from the importer who was bringing them into the country,

On my original images all of the text could be read. Unfortunately, photobucket lost some of the resolution in uploading them.

Thanks Wurger, I have all the Mannlicher catalogues that are available and had seen on the Cornell Publications website that there are a number of Stoeger catalogues available. I wondered whether they were any good or not, and now I know so I will get some as well. Thanks again.

I purchased my 1954 Shooter's Bible on EBay. It is an original issue and was reasonably priced.

I have that catalogue somewhere.

To make a reasonable reproduction of this mount you'd need an example to get dimensions off.

If the mount didn't look like the real thing and perform like the real thing it would be a wasted exercise.

Would there be a market for these mounts ?

I actually had once bought a partial new one of these mounts, The front ring and base only. Eventually I sold it to fund another project.

If they could be made with a somewhat reasonable price it would be great. There are some close tolerances so I'm not sure how feasible that would be. Anyone have a CNC milling machine in the workshop?
