Photos of my 1910 and Questions Also
      #269247 - 14/08/15 11:25 AM

Below are photos of my model 1910 Mannlicher Schoenauer rifle. I have not yet loaded for or fired this rifle. Caliber is the 1910 caliber, 9.5x56 MM. Barrel length, to bolt face, is 19 11/16". Markings show that it was originally proofed in Austria in 1920 and then proofed in Germany in August, 1927.

The stock has been modified and refinished. It appears to have been dropped once or more. The toe of the butt was split, glued and pinned with dowels. The fore grip was split on the right side from the sling swivel escutcheon forward and glued. I think both repairs may have been made at the same time, based on appearance. I suspect that the butt pad was added then as well. The finish feels like polyurethane so it may have been done later.

Questions: Is this barrel length typical for a rifle? How common/uncommon are ball end bolt handles? What is on the bottom of the butt stock just past the fore grip? It looks like some form of writing but I have not been able to match it up to Hindi, Pakistani, Thai, Persian or Arabic.

Thank you gentlemen,

Vlad

Out on a limb... but that writing isn't Georgian, is it?

Though standard factory barrel lengths of the M1910 were 50 cm = 20" for the full stocked Stutzen carbine and 60 cm = 23 ½" for the half stocked rifle, other barrel lengths were listed as availble to order. So half stock Mannlicher-Schoenauers with carbine length barrels come up from time to time and confuse so called "experts". Here are some photos of my own M1910, same configuration, 20" barrel and half "rifle" stock, like your's.

M1910s usually came with the typical M-Sch "butterknife" bolt handle.

If your bolt was with the rifle when it was German proofed in 1927, there must be a crown/U proofmark again on top of the bolthandle root. If not, your bolt has been replaced since then.
To me the bolt now on your rifle, with the solid round knob and the flute in the guide rail, looks very much like a M-Sch M1900 one. Here is a photo of my M1900 bolt in my M1910 action.

DonZ, Though I can't match the characters up exactly Georgian script looks very much to be a possibility.

Kuduae, Thank you for your reply. The bolt on my 1910 rifle does look like your 1900 bolt. The bolt on my 1910 does have the crown over B and crown over U proof markings and the underside of the bolt root is serialized matching the receiver and barrel.

Thank you both for your input.

Vlad

Vlad, I have a 1910 in 9.5 x 57 MS which is half stocked and has a 19 inch barrel. It is a take-down model which is British proofed in 375 NE, I have seen several examples like mine so I don't think that the 19 inch barrel is all that uncommon.

Waidmannsheil, Thank you for weighing in.

I think that this rifle was ordered in this configuration, I.E.-half stock, carbine barrel and M1900 style bolt. I just double checked the serial number on the underside of the bolt root with the serial numbers on the receiver ring and barrel to see if they are in the same font and they are. This is something I learned while collecting military Mauser rifles. Force matched serial numbers on Mauser rifles are usually in a different font.

Though barrel length is not that unusual, apparently, it seems the bolt is.

Vlad, I agree, all the 1910 Mannlichers that I looked at had the flat bolt handle. Yours is definitely a bit unusual but certainly looks very nice.

I wish I could translate the writing on the butt stock. That may be quite interesting.

The writing is Thai. The five characters on the right are numerals, 47633. The first two are letters, probably K and Th. If the letters are correct, since each letter in Thai is given a "name", the interesting thing is that they'd be Chicken Soldier... I may be mistaken, I'll try to find a Thai who can shed more light.

I wonder what this rifle saw in its life...!

Kano,

Thank you for this information. I had given up hope of finding out about the language or translation.
