Strange 6.x54 case
      #185393 - 08/07/11 05:04 AM

My 6.5x54 is finally being allowed into South Africa being exported along with her friends from the UK.
This after 228 phone calls to our firearms department to find out the export permits progress, managed to get through to reception 10 times and through to the lady responsible twice, but Africa is not for sissies so we plod on.
My question chaps I purchased brass in the UK and bought loaded Kyncoch cartridges which is Norma brass I have no trouble loading the norma brass but the other unknown brass has a different rim thickness it measures 0.054 whilst the norma's rim thickness is 0.042, the unknown brass is stamped
H X P

69

Not all the unknown brass however have such thick rims some are okay, any thoughts on origin and what can I do with them to make them shootable?

It's a Greek Head stamp.

Could the brass have been made from another cartridge ?

I'll have to dig out some old info I have, but I believe that there were two Greek army loadings for the 6.5x54mm.

One was for the M1903 etc. rifle/carbine and the other was for an Austrian machine gun that Greece used at the time. I forget the name but I have the info at home in a Greek reference.

I have seen (and may still have) a copy of the box as I translated it for someone.

So maybe the thick rimmed stuff was for the machine gun.

George

I'm still looking for my picture of the ammo packet, however I did find my book on Greek smallarms.

The machinegun that I refered to was the Hotchkiss M1926 and M1922. These were normally chambered in 7.92 mauser but were supplied to Greece in 1925-1928 chambered for the 6.5x54MS.

The velocity for this weapon with a 577mm is given as 745m/s for the 6.5x54MS round.

The same text gives the velocity for the M1903 rifles as 680 m/s for a 725mm barrel and 627 m/s for are carbine with a barrel that was 525mm long.

So comparing the velocity of the machine gun to that of the carbine we see that there approx. 100 m/s difference in velocities.

So as I said, there is obviously 2 loadings and it feasible to assume that the rim thickness is thicker for the machinegun loading.

Any chance you can take a few pics of the two cases side by side?

Regards

George

First time posting an image hope this works, the machine gun concept makes sense although they are not berdan primed cases they do have crimping marks on the top of the primer pocket which may sugest use in a automatic.
They dont fit in my case holder maybe I can get the rim turned down?

If turning rims, always turn from inside the extractor groove, not the base.

An easy job with a small lathe.

If you don't have a lathe, it might be easier to just use 'normal' brass.
