Did any of you ever hunt with this round....?

Hello Pondoro,
it is a very good caliber for boar hunting concerning your northern birch-trees.You can shoot through the trees and the animals will fall. The maximum range for a good shot is around 120 meters. Can you post a photo of your gun in the forum or on my mail adress ?
I use M.Schönauers as my favorit rifles.
kind regards Johann from Austria

P.S.I have also a reloading equipment for the above mentioned caliber.

The 9.5x57 is a wonderful round, especially with the miriad of excellent bullets available in .375" diameter.
: I would load for it myself, using 8x57 or 7x57 brass.
: With US made bullets, the 270gr. Hornady RN is an excellent bullet for those velocity levels of around 2,200fps.
: I have long wanted to build a rifle in this calibre for my own, all-round ctg. for deer to moose and big bear. It will do it all. You just have to shoot it straight. As to range, the Norma or Speer 235 is a good deer bullet for out to 200 yards or more in that round.

Just in case anyone missed the pictures of Johann/Collath 500 BPE's Mannlicher Schonauer rifle, the pictures are here.

Pondoro,

Please post pictures of your rifle. It must be a lovely gun.

Congratulations on your fine taste!

It is a great rifle. Unfortunately, I have not hunted with it yet. I will try to post pictures. I hope something comes up.

It is VERY expensive to buy cartridges (from $5 to $10 each), so I got a set of forming/loading dies from RCBS. Expensive, but they paid for themselves the first shooting session. Any pf the 30-06 or 8mm Mauser family of cases can be easily reformed. I use 46gr to 48gr of IMR 4064 with a 270gr Hornady RNSP (MAXIMUM). Any shorter, lighter, or different shaped bullets don't feed well from the rotary magazine. With the peepsight, it is more accurate than I am with my old eyes (trifocals now). A very impressive gun.
