Howdah pistols - licence requirements in Aust?
      #258742 - 07/01/15 05:38 PM

I seriously looked at bidding for a nice Howdah pistol for an auction some time ago, but not having a suitable licence it was pretty moot. Plus not being able to attend to have a look at it.

I'm intrigued, what legal 'mechanism' have people used to acquire a howdah pistol in Australia?

Are there any shooting sports require a howdah to participate?

A nice sized one is well over the .399 calibre rule. In SA knocking over steel plates is a requirement for a sport to justify a larger calibre.

I guess they are usually purchased as a "collectors" item?

My understanding then is one can not own ammunition for collection pieces, unless one gets a special PTA for the ammunition, and that is granted usually only once per year, though now that might be twice per year ... and one still can not own the ammo AFTER the shoot if any is left ...

Any way else?

I'm guessing the Pedersoli BP ML howdahs are pretty much off limits in Aust as well? I am guessing they are possible bank robbery tools per the boys in blue?

This is all a bit ridiculous. But I guess a collectors licence is the usual way.

Its a Collectors Licence here in the Northern Territory too, but no silly restrictions on owning ammunition.
In this jurisdiction, if you own any firearms of that 'class' then you can lawfully own all ammunition for firearms of that class. ie owning even a single handgun permits the lawful possession of all calibers of pistol ammo.

Some food for thought: if one reads Section 17.1.12 "Supplementary Events" of the SSAA Rules for Big Game Rifle competition, one will find that the banana-benders shoot a "Howdah Pistol" event from time to time. This might be a way to influence your state legislators to allow possession of such hardware for the purpose of burning powder!
If you were to consider pursuing that course of action, I would suggest treading lightly with the full backing of the SSAA State Executive and probably also the BGR discipline chairman, rather than sending the bull into the china shop...

I was wondering if the BGRC had any howdah comps. In SA to justify they would need to knock down silhouette steel type targets is my guess.

I think NE may need to form a NE Online Collectors Club as well.
