British Breeders Try to Create a "Super Spaniel"
      #277340 - 30/01/16 10:59 AM

Historically, there were only two spaniel breeds, with Shakespeare and several others talking about the now extinct English Water Spaniel, and the Land Spaniel. Sadly, the derived breeds - Sussex, Clumber, Springer, Cocker etc are now too deeply inbred, and are slowly dying out. Some British veterinarians are mooting a return to the past by creating a "Super Spaniel" that would be a mix of existing spaniel breeds.

There is also a separate movement to get the UK Kennel Club to recognize the "Sprocker Spaniel," a popular Springer - English Cocker mix.

I wonder what members here think about these attempts. I, for one, love the idea. One of my favorite dogs was a golden Cocker. She died horribly from congenital disease. I'd love to see that none of these beautiful dogs ever suffers the way she did.

Sprockers are great dogs...

Unfortunately kennel club recognition is usually the beginning of the end for good working dogs as the breed then gets show-bred to death until the good working traits are gone...

The Brittany/Springer crosses make wonderful bird dogs- ducks and upland. Some point, some flush - they all retrieve.

We are seeing a lot of crossbreeds being used and they make very good dogs. Popular amongst game keepers in the Scottish Borders are Border pointers - a lab cross German short haired or wire haired pointer, sporockers and lab cross she anieks are also common. I am training a lab cross Bavarian mountain hound. There have been a couple of litters and are skinny Labrador with a supercharged nose, lots of drive and an element of "I know best and I will do what I want" about them, but I expect once she gets a bit older and steadier they will be even better. Insurance cost for a cross breed are about half that of a pedigree.
