Marvellous stuff indeed!

A great pity one of its triggers has fallen off...

Wow!
I would really like a double rifle in 6.5x53R

Some things I noticed right away

Unfortunate dent in the rib extension. Someone got caned for that!

At the barrel breeches it looks like the barrels are sleeved into the larger portion of the chamber area of the barrel set. Anyone else see that?

The rear claw mount on the barrels looks like it was added after the rifle was finished. Cartridge designation and bullet weight inscriptions are obscured.

At the views of the top lever, does it look like that lever might have been gold-washed and worn to shiny steel?

What a magic wand of a rifle it must be!
I'd like to handle it.

Cheers
Tinker

Yes - right barrel's chamber appears to be a sleeve & yes, there is s ding on the barrel-extension.
The blending of the barrels to the chamber sections appears REALLY odd.

Looking closely I see the feature on both barrel breech ends.
That stepped feature - I've seen that on other small bore doubles of the period.
I have photos here somewhere of a 303 double with similar treatment, also without full length ribs - and with adjustment at the muzzles.
I'll look for that and post here if I find it.

Yes - I see it in the left chamber as well. Had to look at bit more closely.
That rifle you posted. Amazing the barrel separation and the "seemingly" adjustable knob at the muzzle.

Yes I noticed the fact that the breeches have been sleeved, considering the size of the breech end it may have been a 400/350 double at first which was pretty popular in India.

They certainly did a good job as even though the breech end is a bit unique it looks really good. IMO.

Great cartridge and I bet it handles well.

This rifle is a very exceptional example and recently sold at Rock Island auction. It is also mentioned a few times (both by serial number and by description) in Rigby's book "Rigby: A Grand Tradition" in the chapter about the Maharana of Udaipur. It is noted as being a .256 and the only original game scene engraved rifle out of his extensive firearm collection even noting an extra charge from Rigby for the additional engraving and best grade finish/wood.

It was not sleeved at the breech end. That is how it was made. It was, however, rebored to 7x65R well before it was featured in this Explora post (you can see where it says possibly "7x65 M/M RIMMED" on the top of the left barrel in the picture in the post) and it appears that the scope mounts may have been added in conjunction with that work whenever it was done.

By the way: I absolutely love the photography in The Explora. These photographs of this rifles are exceptionally better than those done by RIAC for the auction listing.
