This lovely lady celebrates her 134th birthday this year! A best quality 577/500 3 1/8" Magnum. 28" Damascus barrels with very good bores and a 14 3'8" LOP. 9#7oz weight.

Very nice.

Please tell us about the load and it's accuracy/performance.
That's darn near a six dram load there!

Cheers

The prior caretaker told me that he'd shoot a 2 3/4" 50 yd group. I'm going to have to wait for warmer weather to try her out I'm afraid.

My other hammerless Henry in the same caliber will do just a bit better.

Congrats! It's lovely and seems to be in great shape...
One thing that Henry was peculiar about is that a bunch of his rifles had a spliced pistol grip, which often comes loose. Yours does not show any trace of that unfortunate feature.
I am a tad surprised with the bullet weight. I thought that this round was using the 440grs bullet...
I could certainly be wrong.
Best regards,

It seems that the origional loads were with 340,380, 440,480, 500 and 570 grn bullets according to Bill Fleming.
Quite a large range of weights!
I'm using the Lyman 515141, 420 grn with good luck with the other 500's. It'll be used with this one too.

Beautiful rifle!!. I just have weakness for backtion hammer rifles in express calibers awell as bore rifles.

Looking foreward to hear more from your upcomming shootings. You could contact Watson577 here on the forum. He too reloads for his 577/500 magnum.

Ha' I was under the other frame of mind. I have had experience with only one of these, a best WR, it had a bullet mold with various base and nose plugs that made a bullet of 270 to 340gr.
I had always sneered at the 577/500 mistakingly thinking it was just a stubby open point bullet setup.
This thread and the previous A. Henry 577 thread educated me on that. I have since found some reference to them handling quite a wide range of weights in regulation.

Could it be that all the load data, weights seem to use the similar 1800 fps-ish velocity ???
A 270 open point and a 570 hardened solid.....with some sort of regulation.....Oh' wow....very cool

It has some very good possibilities!
I haven't tried any of the larger ones yet. The lyman does quite well but if the heavier ones will regulate.. COOL!
I'll see about working some up more towards spring.

I did find some paperwork in the bottom of the case that said that a prior owner had this butt pad installed in 08. The heel and toes plates were removed then. Too bad because those are so elegant on a quality rifle.

That's a great rifle. Now you will have to tell us whether you like the hammers or the hammerless rifle better.

LOL, Subtle huh Jens!?
I want to work with these to see what they do for a while.

Then you'll need to talk CptCurl into doing a swap with his 577 BPE Henry..

Let us know how your final regulation loads do over a chronograph.

The prior owner said his loading will works with 66 grns of H 4198, 10 grns of dacron a lyman 515141, 425 grn bullet. It runs out at 1880 fps.

I use the same load on the other one and it works well also.

He sent a box of this load with it so I'll give them a try!
