Browning CCS 525?
      #119994 - 02/12/08 01:59 AM

Hi,

Any experiences on the Browning at all? I have not been able to find any articles or other writings.

I've seen it at an outdoors fair, and it handled and pointed well.
Does anyone have any experience: how does it shoot; how does it compare to other like rifles; are there any odd features on it that one should be aware of (such as cocking lever, not cock on break)? It seems to have one trigger only; any info on the lock and firing mechanism?
Especially in comparison to the Heym or Beretta Silver Sable. What seems to be the main difference(s)?
Of these, the Heym is probably the best known and for sure has a very good reputation. Those that I have handled I have not been able to fault and all user comments have been positive only.

The Browning website is not very informative on the model. Can anyone enlighten me as to the differences between the standard and the "Elite" model of the CCS 525?

Any info on quick-detachable scope mounts? On the pictures it is hard to tell what system could be employed, or even if some gunsmithing may be required.

The CCS525 is the mechanized version of the classic FN-Browning CCS25 O/U rifle still handmade in FN's custom shop and which costs 3 x as much.
The CCS525 starts from a (Miroku made) 20 ga B525 action. It is a very neat rifle whose bbls. can be regulated by the owner, using different spacing rings between the muzzles. Obviously, it works and I've had several enthousiastic reports from established gunmakers. The "elite" is a more refined version of the CCS525, sporting mechanical, though hand touched up, engraving. The rifle's rib is prepared to receive a scope mount (swing-out I believe). Latest retail prices are 3279 € (4134 USD) for the std. rifle and 3799 € (4790 USD) for the Elite.

Quite in another league is the CCS25, handmade in Liège (Belgium) from a specially reinforced and heat treated B25 20 ga action. Metal-, woodwork and engraving (signed) are classically hand built by master craftsmen. Bbls. are regulated the old and hard way by wedge moving/soldering and test shooting. I'm fortunate to own the one below, acquired in 1982. It a B 5 grade signed by José Baerten, FN's former master engraver and is chambered in 9,3x74R. I've had it topped off with a Swarovski 1,25-4x24 in Sühler claw mounts.

Today, the same rifle may be ordered for 12900 € (16264 USD), excl. scoping.

Both the CCS525 and CCS25 can be seen in Browning's catalog or website : http://www.browning-int.com/intro.html

PS
In both cases, the single trigger is of the inertia type.

Thank you, Andre!

Very informative, indeed.

Certainly when handling the gun the quality felt good and the balance was simply astonishing.

I have a pdf version of a French article which compares the CCS 525 to 11 other double rifles. The regulation with the rings apparantly works quite well. PM me your E-mail address if you want a copy.

Thank you for the offer, Nighthawk; but unfortunately neither me nor anyone I know speaks French, so there is no need for the article.
What were the main comments on the Browning, and what other guns were on test?

They compared the accuracy of 12 OU double rifles with 3 types of ammunition (RWS TIG, Norma Oryx and S&B SP) at 50 meters:
- Beretta 686
- RWS
- Zoli Focus
- Fabarm Asper
- Blaser 2000
- Chapuis Super Orion
- Verney-Carron Sagittaire NT
- Browning CCS 25
- Sabatti Luxe
- Rizzini Small Action
- Heym 2005
- Fair Safari

The Sellier & Bellot ammo gave the worst group (13 cm) in the Browning. RWS TIG and Norma Oryx gave 4,5cm and 5 cm groups.

In the second part of the article, they tested the regulation rings. The author didn't believe at the start of the article that it would work. He chose RWS T-mantel 196 grain ammo (instead of Winchesters with Nossler Partition 200 grain bullets which were used to regulate the gun at the factory).

All rings gave different group sizes. The best being 1.5 cm at 50 meters (worst was 19 cm).

Dear Colleagues,

I’m going to buy this Browning o/u rifle. Despite the fact it isn’t in the production anymore. I mean CCS525. Has anybody had any experience with it?

As it was told there is not too much information about this rifle. So any information will be highly appreciated.

Does anybody have and can share above mentioned French article about o/u rifles testing?

Thank you in advance.

Finally I've got it!

Here it is

General view

Engravings

Wood

Barrels and adjusting mechanism

Sighting plane and base for scope mountings

Action view

Factory target (grids 4x4 cm)

Now we can compare this gun with a Browning C25 from here

The building quality is high (as all Brownings are) as well as all impressions of this gun.

One interesting thing. Famous Browning's barrel selector here doesn't work - there is a limiting pin (it limits movement of the selector to the left). I've removed it...

Hello everybody!

Finaly I've decided about scope and mounts. It should be a Leupold VX-5HD 1-5x24 Firedot Duplex and EAW QD pivot mounts. I've ordered them.

Now I have a new problem: how to sight this system properly? Does anybody have any idea or can share appropriate links?

Thank you, Louis!

I've already thought about reloading. But I have no experience in it, and we are not shooting here so much to the big game.

But who knows?

Also I would add that I've changed the space ring to correct barrels convergence after instalation of the rifle scope.
