.303 Rigby Rising Bite - GunBroker.com

Gents,

Did anybody make any calls on this one? Seemed a tad on the high side to me but that's probably because thus far I haven't been overcome with a blinding need for such a thing.

I don't think it is too high. Maybe for the market today but hot for the market in years passed.

A very nice little rifle.

Seller is a machinist or tool maker - notice the 1/2/3 blocks..?

Nice looking rifle.
I wonder who's been working on it.

I like this bit. "This one is kinda Rare as only appx.1800 were made in England"

That rifle is rarer than that, not many Side Lever Rising Third bites were made.

Very nice indeed.

What a lovely rifle. When I saw it I thought it might be the same rifle as this one:

http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=157484&an=0&page=2#Post157484

It's not the same. It appears to be in nicer condition, with its butt unmolested and without that wanky improvised aperture sight (a Lyman present instead).

Sure would go nice with my other .303 doubles. . . .

Ahhhhhh, but no money. Rats!

Curl

P.S.

It's a fine rifle, but that guy is probably the worst photographer of them all. If I were trying to squeeze $50+k out of a nice rifle I would present it somewhat better. Inexcusable!

I'm no expert on Rigbys but I would say the side lever variation is quite rare. For me I'm not sure it adds to the appeal, but I would love to have one whether side lever or top lever.

Does anybody know an approximate number of rising bite rifles that were made?

I think they are quite appealing, but it's hard for me to accept that this is a stronger 3rd fastener than a Webley screw grip. I would place my bet on the screw grip to win a contest of strength between the two. In fact, I would wager that the Webley screw grip is the strongest third fastener of all.

While making comparisons I would be willing to bet my Purdey .303 with snap action Jones underlever and a wedge type third fastener makes a stronger lockup than this Rigby. I have heard Kirk Merrington say that particular Purdey action beats all for strength.

Nevertheless, the Rigby is a nice rifle. Just not $50k nice for me, even if I had $50k of walking around money.

That one is from my family's collection. Mine is the younger brother of this one though. Mine was built in late august, 1908. If I were to ever sell it, I'd have a seriously angry brother ready to bludgeon me with the nearest blunt instrument! The gun in the add is a real gem from what I can see though. Curl is right, he needs to get someone who knows more about operating a camera!

Its nice to see another one out there. The last one that I saw for sale went for 42K if I recall correctly. I'm not 100% on that. And I don't remember which auction I saw it in.

I don't post often here, since I rarely have much to add to the conversation, but I always stop in a few times each week to look at the eye candy and try to learn some more about double rifles.

All the best,

Wes

I think you are right Kamilaroi if you are talking number made, there certainly are not 1800 rising bite side levers !! I have always coveted a Westley 12 bore drop lock with side lever but never seen a good one (: At current echange rates that is GBP31k which I think is a bit high BUT a bloody rare object, best, Mike

^Thanks MB. I do mean side-pedals. I don't know the patent year of the RBRB but only that side-pedals seem to have had a short period of favouritism (apt from on Fraser FBs) but lent themselves to use on guns with driven game and reloaders adjacent.

If one looks at the physiological mechanics of continual reloading over a day the sidelever has advantages.

Kamilaroi

"I don't know the patant year of the RBRB but only that side-pedals seem to have had a short period of favouritism (apt from on Fraser FBs) but lent themselves to use on guns with driven game and reloaders adjacent. "

1879 was the patent year by Thomas Bissell. The Patent No. was 1141.

I have never followed the "Use No" but it would be interesting to see what the Use No's" got up to.

Side Pedals - I think Stephen Grant's use of them showed when they were in favour and not. Side levers lasted longer than the RBRB !!!

I would have thought that the use of a side lever on a RBRB Double was very much customer order ????? It would be interesting to see what the records say. These were not "cheap" guns and in view of the fact that Top levers were the order of the day for 99.9% of gun made, I just can't see Rigby making a side lever DR for anything but a customer order.

After all, I believe the cost of making the RBRB action was one of the reasons they stopped making it and went to Webley Screw Grip Sidelocks (and probably some other one's as well).

I feel sure you are correct that the sidelever was custom order.

If you want a sidelever gun now you can order one right up just the way you want it from Piotti:

"Piotti fratelli" are the ne plus ultra...

Just saying. (but I heard that Purdey are interested in doing double rifles that may be under what H&H "asks"))

Their is at least one more in existence. One used to live in Australia but I believe was stolen about 15 - 20 years ago.
It has never surfaced.

Mike

Do a search on Stephen Grant.

I think it is his side lever they used.
