Merkel 140A for sale - Advice sought
      #181578 - 14/05/11 05:54 PM

Safari firearms have a Merkel 140A in 500NE listed for sale at a price of AUD $10200.00.

I have no doubt some knowledgeable forum members can advise me as to this make/model. It appears to have pretty wood but I know very little about these rifles and this would be my first double rifle.

Merkel is a good rifle but I have seen them go for $8,000 also is it a ejector? They are usually a bit dearer but I would only pay up to $8000.

Cheers
Steve

Merkel have a very good name and reliable with the 140A a popular model. Granite Arms was the Importer / Dealer but since the owner died I am not sure if they are still running. They did have a number of D.R. for sale on other websites after his death so I am not sure.

Unless you like the .500 and the associated pain I would stick with the .470 but that's just my opinion. But it is a very good price and having fired only a dozen rounds or so it will be 'As New'

Ask for Gary at Safari Firearms, he is a good guy, the owner and is always helpfull.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

Thanks fellas. I don't know if its an ejector or not yet. I'll try to find out on Monday. I do like the 500 just cause its BIG !
I have played with a mates 500NE Sabatti and found the recoil to be liveable so I'm not too worried about it.
It sure looks pretty

The Merkel will be far superior to the Sabatti IMO.

Also if you shoot BGRC, a .500 allows you to shoot >.485 .

I've seen Merkel's go for around $8,000 too, but they were all .470's .

Thanks John

I would be buying to shoot BGRC with my mate. It highly unlikely that I would ever hunt with it. I have played with my mates Sabatti's and I'm not impressed with them at all (he is returning one) but I guess they are pretty good for the money.

If they don't work, then they are not good for the money
as many have found out.

500Nitro your correct.
The rifle in question is poorly regulated and has caused no end of frustration. My mate is now entering the arduous phase of getting a refund

Oh dear, sorry to hear.

Can you ask him a question for me.

Can you ask him to look at the Muzzles of the barrels and see if a dremel cutting tool has been used to remove the rifling on one side of the barrels. (Which of course makes the bullet go a certain direction).

Their seem to be 3 types of Sabatti's

1. Those that work fine and shoot fine
2. Those that work but just don't shoot
- as though they have never been regulated.
3. Those that have had the rifling removed on one
side of the last part of the muzzle in some sort of cheap way of regulation.
NOTE - It doesn't seem to have worked.

How is the supplier responding to the refund request ?

You might like to point out what Cabella's / Sabatti are doing with the US guns that have been sold but don't work.

Cabela's and Sabatti have been giving refunds to those who requested them and / or taking the gun back and re regulating them properly - even sending them back to Italy to be done. The first one's that were sent back are just coming back to the US now so we should here more in the near future if Sab have done a good job.

Empire375, I have no idea what the difference in price would be in OZ for thet double you are looking at, but in the USA they can be had for around $8K usd "USED"! Looking at the picture you posted this rifle seems to be one of the newer ones made on Mono-block barrels, and most of those imported into the USA are ejector rifles.

I have a couple of Merkel double rifles, a 140-2, 470NE Safari and a 140E-1, 9.3X74R. Both are well made, and are real shooters. Both are Shoelump barrel sets, and the 470NE is an extractor rifle, while the 9.3X74R is an ejector rifle.

The biggest difference between the Merkel 500NE, and the 470NE rifles is the weight of the 500NE is lighter than the 470NE rifle, with a good bit higher felt recoil over the 470NE rifle, both having the same barrel profile, with the 500NE haveing a bigger hole through the barrels. The 500NE rifles I've handled were all around one pound lighter than the 470NE. With this in mind, if you have shot the Sabatti chambered for 500NE, and it is no problem for you then the Merkel will be less problem with the recoil, and far less problem with quality control of constrction. I wouldn't trade either one of my Merkels for a half dozen Sabattis if I had to keep them! Just my opinion, and worth exactly what you paid for it here!
